World Reeling from Global Crowdstrike BSOD Outage: “The Largest IT Outage in History”

The Crowdstrike outage has caused a shock and panic among IT professionals worldwide, as issues continue to escalate.

Users and IT professionals impacted by the ongoing outage have turned to social media to voice their opinions. Among them is Troy Hunt, a Microsoft Regional Director and the founder of HaveIBeenPwned, a platform that verifies if your personal data has been compromised.

Troy Hunt utilized Twitter/X to clarify the issue at hand. As Crowdstrike functions as a type of computer security that works similarly to antivirus software, it requires access to a ‘privileged’ area on a computer: “This allows them to have extensive control in order to identify and minimize potential threats. However, if an update malfunctions, it can cause significant damage to your device.”

Hunt continued, stating: “In my opinion, it is not premature to declare that this will be the biggest IT outage ever recorded.”

According to Colin Childs, a Sysadmin and network operations professional, who shared his thoughts on BlueSky, the recovery process from these issues would require manual intervention on most affected systems. As a result, the recovery process is estimated to be lengthy and expensive.

Security expert Alec Muffett expressed his frustration not only with Crowdstrike, but also with Windows and Microsoft on Bluesky, stating “I am unable to justify the use of an operating system that relies on unknown third parties for its basic core integrity.”

The journey to overcome this issue appears to be challenging, and the responsibility will rest on the shoulders of IT experts who may have several lengthy days ahead of them.
