The second episode of *Worst Ex Ever*, titled ‘Betrayed by the Badge’, explores the distressing case of Seemona Sumasar, who was wrongfully implicated by her assailant, Jerry Ramrattan, in a disturbing scheme of corruption that jeopardized an innocent woman’s life. Each case highlighted in this gripping true crime series, including the stories of Ben Foster, Mei Li, and Rosa Hill, evokes frustration, but the plight of Seemona stands out as especially heartbreaking.
Seemona and Jerry began their relationship in 2006, but she ended it upon discovering he was a married man with children. In 2009, he sexually assaulted her, prompting Seemona to approach law enforcement with a strong case against him.
Instead of suffering the penalties for his actions, Jerry concocted a scheme to falsely accuse Seemona of several thefts. Despite her solid alibi and his clear motive, she ended up incarcerated for months, witnessing her life unravel around her.
Seemona’s Lawsuit Against Nassau County
In December 2010, after the truth emerged, Seemona was released from Nassau County Correctional Center. A year later, she initiated a lawsuit against the county and the detectives responsible for her wrongful imprisonment.
It was not until January 2017, almost seven years post-arrest, that Nassau County chose to settle the case out of court, awarding her $2 million in damages.

The resolution indicated that Seemona and her daughter, Chiara McDonald, consented to drop their claims against all defendants except Detective Charles, who played a pivotal role in her interrogation. According to Seemona, Detective Charles failed to inform her about the charges, leaving her in the dark regarding the reasons for her arrest.
“After a lengthy interrogation, she finally indicated that Sumasar was viewed as a suspect in a robbery,” the court records state.
Seemona reiterated that from the moment she was linked to impersonating a police officer, she suspected Ramrattan’s involvement.
“I informed Detective Charles about Ramrattan and the ongoing rape trial; I mentioned his history of posing as a police officer and even described a bulletproof vest I had seen in his vehicle,” she noted. “It’s known that Ramrattan operated a security firm and presented himself as an ex-NYPD officer on his business website.”
Moreover, Detective Charles had documented conversations indicating that Ramrattan, referred to as ‘Jerry the Cop’, misrepresented himself as a detective; however, in court, she asserted she could not recall this information.
Current Status of Seemona Sumasar
As per her LinkedIn profile, Seemona has been a flight attendant for Frontier Airlines since 2014.
In *Worst Ex Ever*, she highlights her journey after graduating from Queens University and working as a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley in Wall Street, ultimately buying a Golden Krust restaurant in 2006.
Following her confrontation with Ramrattan, she endured a protracted struggle for justice, leading to her $2 million settlement in 2017, three years after transitioning careers.
Seemona maintains a low public profile for herself and her child but bravely chose to share her story through the Netflix documentary.
Current Status of Jerry Ramrattan
As of August 2024, Jerry Ramrattan is imprisoned at the Eastern NY Correctional Facility, a maximum-security institution in Napanoch, New York.
Jerry was known for impersonating law enforcement officials.
He received a 32-year sentence for charges including rape, conspiracy, and witness tampering—having already served over 12 years, he is not eligible for parole until April 2032.
Ramrattan’s accomplices, Rajive Mohanlal, Terrell Lovell, and Luz Johnson, eventually cooperated with authorities against him. They faced charges of perjury, with Lovell and Johnson receiving six months in jail along with four years of probation.
If it weren’t for Jerry’s ex-partner Sophia Lewis, Seemona might still be imprisoned for crimes she did not commit. The case unraveled when Sophia approached the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, disclosing Jerry’s intent to frame Seemona.
Rather than conceal his plan, she chose to inform the authorities and distanced herself from him. Following interviews, detectives found Mohanlal, Lovell, and Johnson very forthcoming.
Public Outcry Against Nassau County Officers
Following the airing of *Worst Ex Ever*, viewers have expressed their outrage at the Nassau County police officers and detectives involved in Seemona’s case.
On Reddit, one commenter stated, “Every officer and DA in Nassau County featured in Episode 2 should be named, shamed, and terminated. This level of incompetence breeds distrust in law enforcement.”
Another viewer responded after watching the episode: “Despite the settlement, that time spent locked up is a long ordeal, and I would still harbor rage.”
A third user added, “It’s shocking how she was mistreated by the police. The case was evident, yet they appeared to collaborate with that reprehensible individual.”
Although some viewers suspect police collusion with Jerry, this notion was absent from legal discussions. The lawsuit primarily attributes failures to negligence.
Documents highlighted that Seemona had a restraining order against Jerry, which he violated. Additionally, prior allegations suggested he impersonated police, which he turned against Seemona.
“Detective Charles acknowledged she was familiar with Ramrattan prior to Seemona’s interrogation as she had reviewed his criminal history,” the lawsuit indicates.
“Ramrattan’s rap sheet revealed he had several felony charges, including violent offenses and gun-related incidents. Notably, he had prior convictions—specifically one felony and two misdemeanors.”
Seemona observed that Detective Charles carried a photograph of Ramrattan during the questioning.
Despite her insistence that Ramrattan had orchestrated the frame-up, Detective Charles allegedly dismissed her claims, asserting they were unrelated to Ramrattan.
Upon viewing the events depicted in the Netflix series, one individual commented, “All officials in Seemona’s situation should have resigned or been dismissed.” Another remarked, “This series should be retitled *Worst Ex Ever and the Failings of Law Enforcement*.”
At the close of the episode, a message on the screen states, “Nassau County Police declined to provide comments regarding Jerry Ramrattan or Seemona Sumasar.”
