The second installment of Worst Ex Ever, titled ‘Betrayed by the Badge’, explores the traumatic experience of Seemona Sumasar. She was falsely accused and manipulated by her ex-partner Jerry Ramrattan, and became entangled in a network of deceit and misconduct that almost ruined her life. Please be advised that this content may be disturbing to some.
Despite the frustration that viewers at home have experienced while watching the new true crime docu-series, every case, including those of Ben Foster, Mei Li, and Rosa Hill, has been equally difficult to witness. However, the injustices endured by Seemona have been especially heart-wrenching.
Despite initially dating in 2006, Seemona and Jerry’s relationship came to an abrupt end when she discovered he was married with children. However, in 2009, he committed the heinous act of raping her. Without hesitation, Seemona reported the crime to the authorities and built a strong case against him.
Jerry decided to avoid the repercussions of his crime by devising a plan to falsely accuse Seemona of a string of robberies. Despite the evidence linking him to the accusations and his clear motive, Seemona’s strong alibi, and her previously stable life crumbling, she was unjustly imprisoned for several months.
Seemona’s Case Against Nassau County
After the truth was revealed in December 2010, Sumasar was released from Nassau County Correctional Center. A year later, she filed a lawsuit against the county and the detectives responsible for her wrongful arrest, seeking damages.
In January 2017, after almost seven years since her arrest, Nassau County finally agreed to reach a settlement out of court. As a result, she received $2 million in damages.
According to court documents, the NC police officers and detectives involved were:
- Lisa Charles
- Deborah Carter Bershad
- Joseph Brady
- Robert Nill
- Michael Knatz
Ultimately, the lawsuit alleges that the defendants committed several violations against Seemona, including false arrest and malicious prosecution, denial of a fair legal process, damage to her relationships with her family, conspiracy to violate her civil rights, and negligence.
Seemona’s attorney Anthony was grateful the truth finally came out
Ultimately, it is stated that Seemona and her daughter, Chiara McDonald, reached an agreement to dismiss their claims against all of the defendants mentioned above, with the exception of Detective Charles, on a voluntary basis.
Charles played a significant role in the case as he was in charge of interrogating Seemona. According to court documents, Sumasar claimed that Detective Charles did not inform her of the charges against her, leaving her to speculate the reason for her arrest.
After a few hours had passed, Detective Charles finally revealed that Sumasar was under suspicion for involvement in a robbery.
In the same way that she recounts in Worst Ex Ever, Seemona stated that as soon as she found out she was being accused of impersonating a police officer, she was adamant that Ramrattan was responsible.
“The conversation with Detective Charles included Sumasar’s disclosure of Ramrattan’s pending rape trial, his history of impersonating police officers, her observation of a bulletproof vest in his car trunk, and her frequent sightings of him with a police shield and gun,”the statement added.
It is unquestionable that Ramrattan presented himself as a former NYPD law enforcement officer on his company’s webpages, as he operated a security company.
“Furthermore, Detective Charles’s records reveal that she was informed by the Queens DA’s Office that ‘Jerry the Cop’ had misrepresented himself as a detective. However, during her testimony, she claimed to have no recollection of being informed of this information.”
Jerry Ramrattan’s current whereabouts
Currently, Ramrattan is incarcerated at the Eastern NY Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison in Napanoch, New York, as of August 2024.
Jerry was known to impersonate police officers
The court handed him a 32-year prison sentence for his convictions of rape, perjury, conspiracy, and witness tampering. He has currently served over 12 years and will not be eligible for parole until April 2032.
Jerry’s accomplices, Rajive Mohanlal and Terrell Lovell, were turned by the authorities to testify against him. Lovell and Luz Johnson were accused of perjury and were given jail sentences of six months and four years of probation.
Thanks to Jerry’s former partner, Sophia Lewis, Seemona was able to avoid being wrongly imprisoned. The case was brought to light when Sophia reported to the Nassau County District’s Office, exposing Jerry’s scheme to frame Seemona.
Despite her desire to keep his secret hidden, she ultimately decided to go to the authorities and express her desire to no longer be associated with him. As soon as detectives interviewed Mohanlal, Lovell, and Johnson, Seemona’s attorney, Anthony Grandinette, states that they readily revealed the information.
Nassau Police Department Under Fire
Ever since Worst Ex Ever was released, audience members have been expressing their displeasure with the Nassau County police officers and detectives who were involved in Seemona’s case.
One Reddit user expressed their outrage, stating, “The individuals involved in Episode 2 from Nassau county, including the cops and DA, should be identified, held accountable, and terminated. Incidents like these only contribute to the lack of trust in law enforcement.”
“After finishing the second episode, another person expressed their discomfort and wondered if anyone else had a similar reaction. They acknowledged that the actress was compensated, but still couldn’t believe the laborious duration of the scene.”
Another person chimed in, stating, “It’s completely outrageous how unfairly the police treated her. I’m shocked that this happened to her, the evidence was so clear but it seems like they were definitely in cahoots with that repulsive man.”
Despite allegations that the police were colluding with Jerry, this was never raised during the legal proceedings. Instead, the lawsuit attributes much of the incident to negligence.
Initially, there was proof of Jerry’s motive as Seemona had a “restraining order requiring him not to communicate with her,”which he violated. Additionally, Jerry’s past, which involved accusations of impersonating police officers – an accusation he made against Seemona – and the rape case further supported this motive.
According to the lawsuit, Detective Charles stated in her testimony that she had already been acquainted with Ramrattan prior to the interrogation, as she had reviewed his criminal record the morning before.
“According to the rap sheet, Ramrattan had four felony charges, which included two violent and one firearms charge. It also listed three convictions, including one felony and two misdemeanors.”
Sumasar noticed that Detective Charles had a picture of Ramrattan attached to the file she had brought for the interrogation.
“Despite Sumasar’s insistence to Detective Charles that Ramrattan was responsible for the charges, Detective Charles purportedly informed her that the charges were unrelated to Ramrattan.”
After witnessing the events depicted in the Netflix docu-series, a viewer remarked, “All of the officers involved in Seemona’s case should have resigned or been dismissed.”Another viewer commented, “This series should be titled The Worst Ex and the Incompetence of Law Enforcement.”
The episode concluded with a message displayed on the screen stating that the Nassau County Police chose not to participate in an interview regarding Jerry Ramrattan or Seemona Sumasar.
