Despite the impending release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic on May 20, the final stages of Wrath of the Lich King are still in full swing. According to the latest DPS charts, the upcoming expansion will have its work cut out in terms of balancing between different classes and specializations.
According to Warcraft Logs, the Fire Mage remains the top-performing specialization in the game currently. This data is based on the top five percent of players in 25-man Icecrown Citadel for that week, also known as the 95th percentile, as found on their zone statistics page for the game.
Despite the lack of surprise, it is worth noting that Fire Mage has consistently shown strength throughout the expansion. What is truly impressive, however, is the significant gap between Fire Mage and its closest competitor. As we head into Cataclysm, the Arcane Mage takes the number two spot, solidifying the class as the top choice for players seeking pure DPS.
While Combat Rogues are struggling to keep up and only appear in the bottom half of the charts, Rogues who have specced into both Assassination and Subtlety continue to put out highly respectable numbers.
Both Fury and Arms Warriors, as well as Paladins, may have valid reasons to feel disappointed. Both Warrior specs are currently struggling to compete, while the Paladin’s sole DPS specialization is also ranking near the bottom.
It is essential to acknowledge the inherent flaws of this tracking system. While it provides a general understanding of the DPS landscape, top players typically avoid playing specs that are significantly underperforming. As a result, the gaps between specs may become even more prominent.
As Cataclysm Classic approaches in less than two weeks, there will be a significant shift in the current meta. The Retribution Paladin was notably formidable during the expansion, and we will soon find out if it can reclaim its former strength.
