Wuthering Waves Combat Mechanics Explained For Genshin Players

A key factor in determining a high-quality open-world gacha game is its combat system, and Wuthering Waves certainly delivers in this aspect. Genshin Impact, known for its innovative use of elemental reactions, has reigned supreme among open-world gacha games for nearly three years.

Despite this, Wuthering Waves offered a refreshing burst of activity when it was released. If you are already familiar with Genshin, you may recognize some of the terminology. However, if you are new to the game, this article will provide an introduction to all of the combat mechanics in Wuthering Waves.

Detailed Wuthering Waves Combat Guide

The combat system in Wuthering Waves shares similarities with that of Genshin Impact, but also includes some new features. Both games feature Normal, Charged, Jump attacks, Skills, Ultimates, Artifacts, and Echoes. However, Wuthering Waves has introduced new elements such as Parrying, the Stagger System, Concerto Gauge, and Forte Circuit.

Wuthering Waves Combat Mechanics Similar to Genshin

Basic Attack

In Wuthering Waves, basic attacks are the most straightforward form of attack. Every character is equipped with their own unique basic attack.

2. Powerful Strike

In Genshin Impact, a charged attack can be replaced by a Heavy Attack in Wuthering Waves. This move can be executed by pressing and holding the basic attack button.

Jump Attack

In both games, Plunge or Jump Attacks require jumping in the air and pressing the basic attack button to execute.

Note: Characters that use Pistol cannot perform plunge attacks. Instead, when they attack mid-air, their gravity decreases. Yes, for now, pistol characters defy the laws of physics in Wuthering Waves.

Normal Dodge

Like Genshin, normal dodging in Wuthering Waves involves sprinting left and right to evade enemy attacks. However, if you have Zhongli, dodging becomes less crucial. Nevertheless, in Wuthering Waves, dodging plays a vital role in maximizing your damage output. This is known as perfect dodging, which will be discussed further in this article.

Echoes

Echoes

One of the most significant and enjoyable features of Wuthering Waves is its echoes. These can be compared to Genshin’s artifacts; however, they are overworld creatures that you must DEFEAT, INCORPORATE, and then EQUIP to your characters. In essence, you could say you are a POKEMON TRAINER in your spare time.

Each Echo offers multiple stat boosts and unique combat capabilities. How awesome is it to defeat monsters with these abilities?

Resonance Skill

The Resonance Skill operates similarly to Genshin’s Elemental Skill, inflicting varying levels of damage depending on the characters involved. It also has the added benefit of recharging the Resonance Liberation and Forte Circuit.

7-Resonance-Liberation

Resonance Ultimate shares similarities with Elemental Burst as it serves a variety of functions. Certain Liberations can provide boosts to allies, while others inflict damage. These buffs may range from elemental damage enhancements to attack-based enhancements (such as normal attacks, heavy attacks, skills, and liberations), as well as healing abilities.

8. Inherent Abilities

Innate abilities in Genshin Impact function similarly to passives, primarily enhancing the stats of characters or the entire team.

Unique Combat Mechanics Introduced by Wuthering Waves

1. How to Perfectly Dodge Attacks

Perfect Dodge

The activation occurs when you successfully evade an enemy’s attack just before it hits you. This causes the enemy to slow down temporarily, allowing you to perform a dodge counter and inflict additional damage. This sets it apart from Genshin, where dodging only resulted in a waste of time without any damage boost.

Note: Perfect Dodge refreshes the cooldown of Normal Dodge. Also, don’t normally dodge twice or else your third dodge will be on internal cooldown.

Dodge Counter

The Dodge Counter is a unique attack that can be executed by using a Basic Attack following a successful Perfect Dodge.

Parrying

Parrying
Parrying | Source: Wuthering Waves (In-game screenshot)

Parrying is the main distinguishing factor between Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves. It enables players to counter enemy attacks by carefully timing their own attacks.

When a foe’s attack is imminent, a Weakness Halo, represented by a yellow ring, will materialize. By precisely timing your basic attack to strike the enemy, you can initiate a counterattack as the two rings intersect. A well-executed parry will diminish the enemy’s Stagger Bar and generate Concerto Energy.

Stagger Bar and Stagger System

The Stagger Bar can be found below the HP bar of boss and elite enemies. It can be reduced by performing Parries, Intro Outro Skills, and Dodge Counters. Once the bar is depleted, the enemy will enter a state of Stagger, rendering them unable to move and increasing the amount of damage they take.

5 . Maybe Circuit

Forte Circuit is an innate ability that grants a distinct effect based on a character’s individual playstyle. The meter located above your health bar displays your current Forte Circuit level, which can be filled by executing Liberation, Skills, Basic Attacks, and Intro Outro Skills.

6-Concerto-Gauge

Concerto Gauge

Concerto Gauge is represented by a circular icon located on the left side of your HP bar. Attacking enemies generates Concerto energy, and once the gauge is full, you can swap to the next character and perform their Intro and Outro Skill.

Section 7: Introduction and Conclusion Techniques

Intro Skills can only be executed when your Concerto Gauge is completely filled, and your character is brought onto the field after switching from another team member. These abilities can either boost the team or the character, or inflict direct damage on enemies.

The Outro Skill functions similarly to the Intro Skill, but is executed by the character that has been swapped out.

Multiplayer Intro and Outro

The activities can be done in multiplayer or co-op mode as long as the other person’s Concerto Gauge is completely charged.

No Elemental Reaction

Despite being similar to Genshin in many ways, Wuthering Waves does not incorporate elemental reactions. Instead, the six elements – Electro, Glacio, Aero, Fusion, Spectro, and Havoc – each deal independent damage and do not interact with one another.

Nevertheless, this does not restrict the overall experience that the combat system has to offer. The animations remain stunning and only improve as you continue to play the game.

About Wuthering Waves

Kuro Games has developed Wuthering Waves, an open-world action-adventure title that can be played for free. This game has been noted for its anime-inspired graphics and gameplay reminiscent of Genshin Impact’s gacha system.

The game, created using Unreal Engine 4, offers players a chance to explore, craft, and gather weapons and heroes. However, unlike other games in its genre, it focuses heavily on combat, providing players with the opportunity to test their skills and experience the excitement they desire.
