The WWE’s upcoming move to Netflix has not only generated excitement among fans, but the wrestlers are also hyping the possibility of more mature content.
In January, WWE revealed that Monday Night Raw will be transitioning to Netflix in 2025. This decision marks the conclusion of a profitable partnership between WWE’s flagship show and the USA Network, which has been airing Raw since its inception in 1993 (excluding the five-year period when it aired on TNN/Spike TV).
Raw, a show that has been historically confined to traditional television, is taking a significant leap forward as its younger audience increasingly turns to streaming platforms rather than cable TV.
For many fans, it is a relief that Raw will no longer have to constantly cater to advertisers, which has generated excitement among talent for a possible change in tone. In an interview with The Ringer Wrestling Show, WWE superstar Braun Strowman revealed that there is a competition among wrestlers to be the first one to use uncensored language on Raw once it becomes available on Netflix.
WWE’s Braun Strowman says superstars are jockeying to be the first to swear on Raw when it moves to Netflix
“I’m really looking forward to when we can join Netflix and have the freedom to say whatever we want,”Strowman shared with the podcast. “It’s a running joke amongst us about who will be the first to drop an F-bomb on TV without facing any penalties.”
Despite the anticipation for more profanity in wrestling, not all are on board with the idea. In an interview on the SI Media podcast, CM Punk shared his thoughts on the matter and advised wrestlers to approach the edgier content with a less-is-more approach.
CM Punk explained that the immediate reaction is often, “We’re going to get to swear,”but he disagrees with this notion. According to him, if everyone is swearing or using vulgar gestures, it loses its impact. The same goes for excessive violence in every show. These elements need to be used sparingly in order to retain their significance.
Despite WWE’s lasting reputation for its provocative Attitude Era, that time has since passed. In 2008, the show reverted back to its original style with a TV-PG rating, signaling a shift towards a more family-friendly and advertiser-friendly product.
Despite frequently pushing the boundaries of the PG rating, Raw and its associated programs, including Friday Night Smackdown, have faced criticism from fans due to censorship and comedic segments.
Despite unofficially abandoning its strictly PG approach in 2014, WWE officially returned to a non-PG tone with WrestleMania XL and the comeback of Dwayne “The Rock”Johnson.
The Rock’s 2024 return to WWE brought with it an edgier tone that had been missing from the product
The Rock’s return was marked by a heightened level of intensity, as evidenced by the frequent use of censored profanity and episodes of Raw that culminated with him standing over a battered Cody Rhodes.
As of now, WWE has yet to announce an exact start date for Raw’s debut on Netflix. However, the show is still currently airing on USA Network. Although Raw will no longer be on the network, the second longest-running program, Friday Night Smackdown, will be making the move to USA Network.
