WWE Superstar Kane Sparks Controversy in Die Hard Christmas Movie Debate

Glenn Jacobs, the mayor of Knox County, Tennessee, and renowned WWE Hall of Famer known as Kane, has reignited a heated debate surrounding the status of Die Hard as a Christmas movie.

While there is widespread consensus that Die Hard is one of the greatest action films ever made, the question of its classification as a Christmas movie remains contentious. The film is set during the holiday season, featuring memorable scenes such as protagonist John McClane’s cheeky message, “Now I have a machine gun, Ho Ho Ho,” scrawled on the body of a villain dressed as Santa. The marketing campaign from 20th Century Fox further hints at its Christmas movie charm.

Despite this, many die-hard fans argue against categorizing it as a Christmas film, suggesting it is merely an action thriller with a festive backdrop. Among these supporters of the non-Christmas movie stance is none other than WWE Hall of Famer Glenn Jacobs.

Kane Enters the Battle Over ‘Die Hard’

On December 6, 2024, Jacobs took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to voice his opinion with a bold poll that simply stated: “Die Hard is NOT a Christmas movie.”

The poll generated thousands of responses and sparked significant debate in the comments. Jacobs later clarified his position, asserting that “Die Hard is an action movie set during the Christmas season. That does not make it a Christmas movie.” In an effort to gauge public opinion further, he conducted a second poll that revealed a substantial majority—three-quarters—of respondents viewed the film as a Christmas classic.

Jacobs has also bolstered his argument by referencing actor Bruce Willis. In a 2018 Comedy Central Roast, Willis emphatically stated, “Please, listen very carefully: Die Hard is NOT a ‘Christmas movie’! It’s a Bruce Willis movie.”

Ultimately, the debate over whether Die Hard deserves a place in the Christmas movie canon is subjective. However, it is noteworthy that prominent voices, including WWE’s Glenn Jacobs, are staunchly supporting the ‘No’ camp. For the record, many including this author consider it not just a Christmas film, but arguably the best one to ever grace the screen.
