X-Men ’97 creator fired by Marvel just before series debut

With X-Men ’97 set to debut on Disney+ in just a week, everyone was surprised to learn that animated series creator Beau DeMayo was fired by Marvel.

2024 appears to be the year of the mutants at Marvel Studios. Indeed, fans will soon be able to see Hugh Jackman’s Logan alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson in the highly anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine. A third part of the Deadpool saga which could well allow other members of the famous X-Men to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

And speaking of the X-Men, fans will soon be able to find the famous superhero team in the animated series X-Men ’97. The latter follows the old animated series X-Men initially broadcast between 1992 and 1997 on Fox Kids.

And while X-Men ’97 is scheduled to release next week, it appears that Beau DeMayo, who is none other than the creator of the animated series, is no longer part of the project.

Beau DeMayo ousted from the X-Men ’97 series by Marvel?

Indeed, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Beau DeMayo would have been fired from the Marvel series. The creator of X-Men ’97, who also served as showrunner and executive producer, is no longer part of the project. DeMayo had however taken charge of the first two seasons of the upcoming series, with some sources suggesting that he was even planning on a potential season 3.

We currently have no further details regarding the reasons that may have motivated such a decision. But everything suggests that DeMayo is clearly no longer part of the production of X-Men ’97, having among other things deleted his Instagram account on which he shared glimpses of the series and with which he answered questions from Internet users.

Also note that DeMayo collaborated with Marvel Studios on other projects, having notably participated in the writing of the Moon Knight series for example, and that he was also involved in the new MCU film Blade.

The new X-Men ’97 series will be available on Disney+ from March 20, 2024, but you can already get a glimpse of it thanks to this first trailer shared last month.
