Ubisoft’s XDefiant, which was once heralded as a formidable contender against Call of Duty and a giant in the gaming landscape, appears to be nearing its end as reports suggest a potential shutdown after just four seasons.
On a post shared through Twitter/X, notable insider Shaun Weber declared the game is effectively “already dead.”

Weber’s tweet sheds light on Ubisoft’s internal efforts, portraying what might be a last-ditch attempt to salvage the struggling title. His report notes that the development team is conducting “in-house test sessions”with play testers to gather further insights. The decisive remark hints that, without a resurgence in player numbers, Season 4 could signal the game’s final chapter.
At its launch, the game’s straightforward mechanics captured the attention of many players amid a sea of intricate and fast-paced battle royales like Apex Legends. Initially, it seemed to ride a wave of success, boasting player counts that soared past 12 million.
However, Ubisoft faced significant challenges with player retention, causing the game to plummet out of the top ten weekly charts across various platforms. Consequently, Weber has reported that unless there is a revival in its player base, the game may cease support following its fourth season.
Currently in its second season, XDefiant still has a window to change its trajectory. An earlier report from Insider Gaming in August claimed that the game needed to turn its situation around by Season 3; therefore, this latest news could provide a slight extension to that timeline.
As of now, Ubisoft continues to engage actively with the game, implementing fixes in response to community feedback. The most recent round of updates, released on October 8, addressed critical issues related to movement, combat mechanics, and unintended interactions.
Following several notable letdowns, including the troubled launch of the pirate adventure Skull and Bones, Ubisoft is eager to regain stability with the upcoming launch of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
