Although XSET has chosen to disband its Apex Legends team, the organization has announced that it will be taking a “strategic pause”from the world of esports as it shifts its focus away from competitive gaming.
XSET announced on April 30th that it had officially dropped its ALGS roster. However, the team’s former players had already disclosed hours earlier that they had been let go, and also stated that XSET was completely exiting the Apex Legends esports scene.
XSET’s competitive esports team in Apex Legends was the last of its kind, with most other members of the brand being either content creators or co-owners of the company.
It is widely known that the esports industry is currently facing financial difficulties. Despite this, XSET remains optimistic that these challenges will eventually be resolved. However, in order to strategically navigate these circumstances, XSET has decided to temporarily pause its involvement in competitive esports. It is important to note that although XSET has consistently fielded competitive teams, esports has never been the primary focus of our mission.
“Despite not currently having plans to re-enter esports, we are heavily investing in enhancing our focus on gaming lifestyle. Our sole involvement in competitive gaming will be through Fortnite, where we have major growth plans in place. Stay tuned for exciting developments,”stated XSET co-founder and CEO Greg Selkoe in an email.
“At the time, he mentioned that having 15 esports teams required a significant amount of funds.”
At its peak investment in 2022, XSET competed in 12 different esports titles, including Rocket League, Rainbow Six: Siege, and Valorant. Despite participating in major tournaments for Apex Legends, Valorant, Rocket League, and Rainbow Six, the organization was unable to secure a championship title.
Despite the negative economic headwinds facing the esports industry, the organization is still one of many who have reduced their investment in the field.
