Yang Se-chan and Yang Se-hyung Showcase Deep Brotherly Connection and Family Love

In a captivating episode that aired on February 12, tvN’s You Quiz on the Block showcased a segment entitled ‘The Miracle of Family, ’ featuring the renowned brother duo, Yang Se-hyung and Yang Se-chan.

Exploring a Lifelong Brotherly Connection

The charismatic brothers appeared on the show wearing matching outfits, embodying their deep familial bond. Yang Se-chan shared, “Reflecting on my journey, I realize that my path into comedy was paved by following my brother around as a child.” Given their close age difference of just one year, Se-hyung often went off to school, while Se-chan found ways to accompany him, despite his brother’s protests.“Even when he insisted I ‘go away, ’ I stayed close. Sometimes I would hide and watch him as he walked away; that memory lingers with me—bittersweet and poignant, ” Se-hyung recalled.

Se-chan reflected on how he emulated every action of his older brother, whether it was performing retro dance moves or sporting identical footwear. They gained popularity in their hometown of Dongducheon and shared recollections of childhood explorations, which included finding cannon shells during playtime—a revelation that startled host Yoo Jae-suk, though Se-hyung confirmed the story.

Displaying an old family photograph on the show, Se-hyung expressed regret over the loss of many precious memories in a house fire. Interestingly, the brothers had been performing the K-heart gesture well before it gained widespread fame through G-Dragon.

Honoring a Mother’s Tenacity and Dedication

Describing their mother as an unequivocally stern figure, Se-chan revealed that she even completed military reserve training. He humorously recounted her sending a photo of herself saluting, while Se-hyung added that she once joked about being capable of defeating foes in battle. Their mother’s adventurous spirit even led her to catch a hawk with her bare hands.

Se-hyung expressed admiration for their mother’s perseverance, recalling, “She was resolute and industrious. When Se-chan was still an infant, she would transport me from Dongducheon to Itaewon, setting up a street stall to sell clothes. Later on, she ventured into wallpapering—a field predominantly occupied by men at that time.”

In a bid to avoid unwanted scrutiny, their mother opted for a short haircut and bound her chest. Se-hyung reminisced about wanting her to attend school events in dressy attire, but after witnessing her hard work firsthand, he gained a deeper understanding of her choices. To this day, he helps her with wallpapering projects whenever possible.

Two Brothers in Comedy: Pursuing a Shared Passion

From an early age, both siblings displayed a knack for performance, even treating the audience to an impromptu rendition of Ryang Hyun, Ryang Ha’s “I Did Not Go To School.”

Se-chan’s aspiration to become a comedian was ignited after he witnessed his brother’s university performances.“At that moment, I thought to myself, ‘I want to do this too.’ That was the first time I stood up to my parents. Being the second child meant I missed out on extra classes, whereas my brother received every opportunity. So, I simply imitated what he learned, ” he recounted.“Once I finally voiced my desires, they supported me.”

Despite their similar names, it often surprises people to learn that they are indeed siblings. Both entered the entertainment realm after participating in auditions with SBS and became integral figures during the renowned eras of “People Looking for a Laugh” and “Comedy Big League, ” leaving a legacy of memorable catchphrases.

When discussing the hurdles of sharing the same career path, Se-chan noted, “Initially, it was challenging because my brother was ahead of me in the industry, resulting in me being viewed as ‘Yang Se-hyung’s little brother.’ Even our colleagues often labeled me as a privileged kid from a chaebol family.”

Nevertheless, their bond remained strong, with regular communication. Host Yoo Jae-suk praised Se-hyung’s thoughtful and serious nature, while Jo Se-ho remarked on his meticulousness, referencing a poetry book Se-hyung published.

Love, Grief, and the Healing Power of Laughter

Se-hyung fondly remembered their father as a reserved but unwavering supporter, providing soft reassurance amidst their mother’s strict discipline. His passing occurred when Se-hyung was 30, and Se-chan admitted he had been too engrossed in his life to notice his father’s declining health.

Upon receiving the devastating diagnosis, Se-hyung opted to remain composed, believing he needed to embody strength for his family. Even after their father’s death, he struggled to erase his contact information.“Even now, at 40, I feel like a child. Making decisions solo is daunting—I long for his reassurance, to hear him say, ‘Se-hyung, you’re doing well, ‘” he confessed.

During Se-hyung’s recovery in the hospital post-surgery, Se-chan provided support by doing push-ups beside him to lift his spirits. Se-hyung reminisced about Se-chan’s own battle with thyroid cancer twelve years prior, acknowledging his devastation but recognizing the importance of remaining resilient and uplifting his brother’s morale.

He also reflected on their father’s cancer journey, emphasizing, “Even during painful radiation and chemotherapy, he would chuckle at my jokes about Mom. That was when I understood—the healing power of laughter transcends pain.”
