Despite being a global fashion icon, BABYMONSTER’s new image has been met with criticism from Korean netizens. Many have pointed out that it resembles fashion trends from the early 2010s and have deemed it too cheesy compared to their seniors, BLACKPINK. Instead of receiving compliments, BABYMONSTER’s new look has sparked controversy among Korean netizens.

Numerous discussions on multiple Kpop forums have garnered widespread attention as they focus on YG’s role in shaping BABYMONSTER’s image. In the comments, there is a prevailing sentiment of sympathy towards the exceptionally gifted group, as they have not been able to reach the same level of success as their predecessors due to their outdated concepts.

Earlier this year, there were speculations that YG was currently without a creative director, which added to the disappointment of BABYMONSTER fans. This puts BABYMONSTER at a disadvantage as the beauty standards in Kpop are always stringent and demand constant updates from entertainment companies to keep up with trends. Developing unique images and concepts is a crucial aspect that entertainment powerhouses like SM or HYBE prioritize. Many renowned groups, such as aespa and NewJeans, have their own “concept universe”. If YG continues to struggle, it will be challenging for BABYMONSTER to establish their own identity and escape the shadow of BLACKPINK.
