Yoo Jae-seok Undergoes Intense Tax Investigation with No Charges Filed

Field News reported on September 19th that the Gangnam Tax Office’s investigation department, part of the Seoul National Tax Service, conducted an extensive tax investigation on MC Yoo Jae-seok over several weeks from June to July. Fortunately, no charges related to tax filing errors were found.

The report indicated that the tax audit was a standard procedure directed at high-income individuals, including celebrities. However, the investigation was more scrutinized than usual, primarily due to the significant worth of the building purchased by Yoo Jae-seok, valued at tens of billions of won, along with his substantial annual income.

The tax authorities performed a thorough investigation concerning various tax items, including high contribution fees and expenses related to the property Yoo acquired. However, despite the intensified scrutiny, no charges were brought against Yoo for intentional tax omissions or tax evasion.

An official from the tax assessment agency stated in the media, “We could not find any issues, such as missing taxes,” and further commented, “It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to consider his tax returns as a national treasure trove.”

In the meantime, the National Tax Service initiated irregular tax investigations into celebrities, athletes, and webtoon creators at the start of last year. This also included actors Kwon Sang-woo, Lee Byung-hun, actress Han Hyo-joo, and comedian Park Na-rae, resulting in tax collections that varied from tens of millions to billions of won.
