The 2024 MBC Drama Awards: A Night of Reflection and Gratitude
The 2024 MBC Drama Awards took place on January 5, although the actual ceremony was held on December 30. The broadcast was delayed due to the national mourning following the tragic Jeju Air plane crash. As a result, the awards presentation was aired as a pre-recorded event.
Celebrating Stellar Performances
Among the evening’s highlights was Yoo Yeon-seok, the acclaimed star of “When the Phone Rings,”who received the prestigious “Best Actor”award (Top Excellence Award, Actor in a Miniseries). He shared this honor with Lee Je-hoon from “Chief Detective 1958.”During his heartfelt acceptance speech, Yoo expressed profound gratitude to all who supported his journey in the industry.
A Heartfelt Reflection
Yoo Yeon-seok reminisced about his beginnings, stating, “Sixteen years ago, I made my debut in ‘General Hospital 2’ with MBC. To stand here now, holding such a significant award, is incredibly overwhelming. My thanks go to the viewers and fans who embraced our drama, the executives who entrusted this project to me, and my agency’s CEO for persisting that I take on this role. Reflecting on my choice, I can’t help but think about what might have occurred had I not accepted.”
Acknowledging the Team
Emphasizing collaboration, he remarked, “This award is not solely mine; it belongs to everyone involved in our production, including the dedicated directors, staff, and talented cast.” He notably mentioned the support he received from actor Han Suk-kyu, who also won the Daesang (Grand Prize) at the event.
The Importance of Encouragement
Yoo further recounts how he drew strength from Han during challenging moments on set. “Toward the end of the shoot, I faced significant physical and mental exhaustion. In my lowest moments, I turned to Han Suk-kyu, who was wrapping up his filming. His encouragement, reminiscent of our time on ‘Dr. Romantic,’ was invaluable. Even during his brief respite, he dedicated nearly an hour to reassure me that I was performing well, which propelled me through the final stages of production. I want to publicly thank him for that.”
A Tribute to Mentorship
In his concluding remarks, Yoo expressed a desire to honor someone instrumental to his success. “Sixteen years ago, during a humble meal at a gopchang restaurant near Seoul National University of Education, our vice president said, ‘Let’s work hard together.’ It’s because of his guidance that I am here today. I am deeply grateful.”
Concluding Thoughts
Yoo Yeon-seok closed his speech with poignant words, stating, “This past December has been especially tough and cold for many. I extend my heartfelt condolences to all who are suffering. May the new year bring joy and warmth to everyone.”
