Youn Yuh-jung Graces the Cover of Harper’s Bazaar Korea, January 2025
Harper’s Bazaar Korea has revealed the stunning cover for its January 2025 issue, featuring the illustrious Youn Yuh-jung. This iconic actress continues to redefine standards in the entertainment industry, showcasing an aura that transcends traditional stereotypes associated with actresses.
A Fashionable Return
Marking her first appearance in front of Harper’s Bazaar’s lens in seven years, Youn Yuh-jung elegantly showcased Tiffany & Co.’s exquisite high jewelry collection. The 77-year-old actress displayed her impeccable fashion sense, effortlessly donning bold ensembles such as a dramatic maxi coat, a tailored structured jacket, and a pristine white suit—outfits that can often challenge even the most seasoned models. Her ability to carry these looks with such grace is truly remarkable.
58 Years of Artistic Endeavor
In her 58th year as a prominent actress, Youn Yuh-jung exuded a calm and poised demeanor during her accompanying interview. She shared insights into her decision to join the second season of the Netflix original series Beef, remarking, “It feels instinctive, like my arms bending inward. When engaging with works created by Korean Americans, I feel an innate connection to them.”
She elaborated, “Director Lee Sung-jin expressed a desire to share stories through me, which captivated my interest because it provided a perspective that is often different from that of Korean directors. While I am frequently cast in roles as a grandmother in Korea, their vision allows them to see me through a unique lens, shaped by their different cultural experiences.” Youn described herself as generally conservative in daily life, yet paradoxically open to taking creative risks in her projects, suggesting that her measured personal life might inspire her adventurous artistic choices.
A Reflection on the Future
Youn Yuh-jung also pondered her motivation to persist in the acting world despite her extensive career. She candidly mused, “I have contemplated retirement. However, I can’t even focus on reading a book for an hour due to eye strain. Ultimately, I believe that daily life is what matters most. I reflect on the health of those around me; what many desire most is the simplicity of daily experiences—not grand aspirations but rather moments like stepping outside a hospital for some fresh air.” She emphasized that acting is an integral part of her daily existence and remains committed to every role that comes her way, believing in giving her all to each performance.
Craftsmanship Over Artistic Labels
Surprisingly, Youn Yuh-jung expressed her preference to be referred to as a “craftsman” rather than an “artist.” She stated, “I’m not fond of the term artist. Perhaps, if someone claims that after I’m gone, I might consider it. For now, it feels like an exaggeration. I prefer to be recognized for my craftsmanship, as having dedicated nearly 60 years to this field warrants that acknowledgment.”
