For the first time, Hong Eun-chae of LE SSERAFIM has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding her comments mocking fans during a live broadcast.
During a media event on August 29 at Yes24 Live Hall in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, to promote the launch of their fourth mini album ‘CRAZY’, Hong Eun-chae addressed inquiries from the media about the Coachella controversy.
Last year in March, Hong Eun-chae’s remarks during a live broadcast on Weverse, while conversing with a student fan, were called into question. During the chat, she made a lighthearted comment about school-related matters, saying, “Being in school for a long time must be challenging, huh?”and chuckled.
During a September live broadcast, she expressed her confusion about the purpose of studying in school and made remarks such as, “I find it amusing when my friends discuss college. When they ask me, ‘What time do you have to go to school tomorrow?’ I simply reply that I have a pickup at 11:30, how fortunate.”
Despite not causing significant problems at the time, the comments resurfaced in April when LE SSERAFIM’s Coachella performance sparked conversations about their abilities, leading to renewed attention on Hong Eun-chae’s previous remarks.
Upon viewing the live broadcast clips that were shared on social media, several netizens expressed their anger and accused her of mocking students. Among the comments were phrases such as, “Is she really mocking students?”, “Her tone and expressions appear to be mocking, which is quite unsettling,”and “There may be numerous student followers; is it acceptable to speak in such a manner?”
Upon addressing the controversy at the showcase, Hong Eun-chae acknowledged, “Looking back, I realize that my actions may have been too casual and that I should have been more mindful in my interactions with fans. I now understand the importance of being considerate, especially with those who are close to me.”
Hong Eun-chae expressed her sincere regret, stating “I deeply apologize for my immature remarks that have disappointed everyone.”She also made a promise to work towards demonstrating a more conscientious and accountable behavior in the future.
At the same time, LE SSERAFIM’s upcoming album ‘CRAZY’, scheduled for release on the 30th, conveys the message “Let’s embrace the craziness with LE SSERAFIM”and features the lead single “Crazy”as well as other tracks such as “Chasing Lightning,””Pierrot,””1-800-hot-n-fun,”and “Reasons Not to Go Crazy.”
