YouTube Introduces Feature to Reduce Short Video Recommendations in Your Feed

YouTube has introduced a new feature that allows users to reduce the number of Shorts videos displayed in their feed while browsing the Google-owned application.

Since its launch in September 2020, YouTube Shorts has become a significant component of YouTube’s mobile applications.

Many users who prefer long-form content have requested a separation of Shorts into a distinct feed or even the creation of a separate app, but YouTube has yet to provide a solution for those users.

However, on October 3, 2024, YouTube officially rolled out an option to “Show Fewer Shorts” within its mobile app.

In a statement, the company explained, “We also want to make sure you can customize your YouTube experience based on your preferences, so we’ll introduce an option to ‘Show fewer Shorts.’”

To activate this feature, users can click on the three-dot menu located in the upper right corner of any Shorts grid found in their Home feed, prompting YouTube to temporarily display fewer Shorts content.

Currently, it remains unclear if this option will be accessible on the Desktop version of YouTube, and users will have to wait for its live rollout to find out.

Following the announcement, social media platforms witnessed an influx of user reactions expressing their enthusiasm for this new feature.

“Good move, I like the option,” remarked one user.

Another added, “A most needed feature.”

“Finally. It’s so annoying sometimes, not gonna lie,” was a comment from a third user.

Conversely, some users indicated a preference for eliminating the Shorts feed altogether, as they often consume similar short-form content from platforms like TikTok or Instagram.

This update is not the only enhancement coming to YouTube Shorts. The company also announced plans to extend the maximum video length from 60 seconds to three minutes, reinforcing its competition against TikTok. This change will facilitate easier cross-posting from TikTok to YouTube and has been positively received since its announcement.
