YouTube Launches Community-Driven Notes Feature to Combat Misinformation

YouTube has recently introduced a community-driven feature that allows chosen users to provide additional information to videos on the platform.

The notes feature on YouTube, initially announced in June, enables users to include significant details about a video on the platform.

According to a blog post by YouTube, initial contributors will have the ability to write notes while a team of third-party evaluators will be responsible for organizing all written content.

After a note has been deemed helpful, it will be displayed below the video. Currently, the feature is only accessible through the mobile app.

In June, YouTube did not specify a specific timeframe for the availability of this feature. However, on August 7, 2024, users started receiving email invitations.

The email states that you have been selected to test a new YouTube feature that enables you to include useful notes on videos. These notes aim to offer extra details and foster a more knowledgeable YouTube community.

Some users will receive immediate access to the new notes feature, while others will be put on a waitlist and will be notified by email when YouTube extends the program.

“Your name may be added to the waitlist for access to this pilot. You will be notified when you are taken off the waitlist and are able to write notes.”

If you do not receive the email, YouTube offers an alternative option to register for the feature via the mobile app.

To register with YouTube on a mobile device:

  1. To access the YouTube mobile app, you will need to sign in.
  2. Click on your profile picture.
  3. Tap on General after selecting Settings.
  4. Tap Begin signing up to receive more information for viewers.

YouTube is now the second platform to implement a community-driven notes feature, following in the footsteps of Twitter/X. Users can access Community Notes on X by completing the sign-up form available on the website, which is open to almost all users.

In 2024, YouTube introduced Notes as its newest feature. Additionally, in June, the Google-owned company made its ‘test and compare’ feature for thumbnails available to all users.
