New information has been revealed for the latest chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, which includes the long-awaited ending to the ongoing Shinjuku Showdown. Starting in chapter 222, the intense battle has finally reached its conclusion, with Team Jujutsu High emerging victorious after a challenging fight.
Despite Ryomen Sukuna being taken down rather easily and with no Heian Era flashback, Yuji Itadori was able to emerge victorious as the last man standing with the assistance of his teammates, Nobara Kugisaki and Megumi Fushiguro, effectively ending the reign of the King of Curses.
Despite putting up an incredible fight until chapter 267, Sukuna ultimately met his demise. While this was a highly anticipated event, it does carry a hint of strangeness.
This article contains the author’s opinions and spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 268.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Sukuna’s Defeat and the Loss of Heian Era Memories
As previously mentioned, the Shinjuku Showdown had reached its boiling point with the chaotic events unfolding. Despite numerous attempts by sorcerers to defeat the King of Curses, none were successful. At every turn, Sukuna seemed to have a trick up his sleeve and would counter with ease.
Nobara’s entrance into the battle had a significant impact. Megumi’s determination to resist played a crucial role in Sukuna’s ultimate defeat. Nevertheless, this part of the narrative did feel somewhat hurried. With creator Gege Akutami concluding the series in the next four chapters, it was necessary for them to tie up loose ends swiftly.
Despite Sukuna’s defeat being fitting with Yuji, Nobara, and Megumi reuniting, there may have been one crucial element missing – a flashback to the Heian Era. Throughout history, Sukuna has been feared for the immense power he was thought to possess during that time. The anime even offers a small glimpse of his true form when he is mentioned.
Although the series built up considerable hype about Sukuna being the most powerful being during the Heian Era and how his name struck fear into the hearts of sorcerers, a proper flashback of his true form was never revealed or fully explored. Despite getting a glimpse of him during Yorozu’s introduction, it was too brief to truly understand his backstory and his impact on sorcerer history. Thus, the mystery surrounding Sukuna’s history remains unsolved.
Despite fans’ expectations, Akutami did not reveal much about Sukuna’s past or how he became a demon. This sparked multiple theories about the Demon King’s backstory and origins, but they remain unclear. Despite the potential shown in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, where we hoped to see a glimpse of Sukuna’s past, it ultimately did not happen. And with Sukuna’s defeat, it is likely that we will never truly know the truth about his past.
Therefore, this will likely remain one of the enigmas of Jujutsu Kaisen. As previously mentioned, due to the limited number of chapters and time remaining for the series to end, the conclusion may have been rushed. It is almost as if the ending lost its intensity after the buildup in the previous chapter. However, it should be noted that the manga is concluding in a satisfying manner with Sukuna’s defeat, but perhaps delving into the Demon King’s backstory would have provided a deeper understanding of his character.
