Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen were overjoyed to finally receive confirmation of Nobara Kugisaki’s status in the latest spoilers for chapter 267 after years of waiting. Not only was Nobara revealed to be alive, but she also made a triumphant return, playing a crucial role in the final battle against Ryomen Sukuna.
Despite the excitement surrounding Nobara’s return, there are some Jujutsu Kaisen fans who have expressed concerns about the way author and illustrator Gege Akutami handled it. In particular, fans believe that they were misled by Yuji Itadori’s conversation with Megumi Fushiguro after the Shibuya incident and his mention of Nobara in his monologue in chapter 265.
Despite Yuji legitimately believing that Nobara was dead, there is a valid explanation for his misconception. Similarly, there is also a justifiable reason why he was unaware of her true condition leading up to the battle with Sukuna, despite her Cursed Technique being highly effective against him. Jujutsu Kaisen has already provided explanations for both of these circumstances.
Jujutsu Kaisen: The Explanation Behind Yuji’s Lack of Knowledge About Nobara’s Survival
In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 144, the previous events are crucial in explaining why Yuji was unaware of Nobara’s survival. When Yuji inquires about Nobara’s whereabouts to Megumi, he receives no response. Despite this, Yuji understands and there is no indication of a passage of time or unheard dialogue, leading fans to believe that Megumi intentionally remained silent.
The two quickly begin discussing their anti-Kenjaku Culling Game strategy and join the rest of the group before heading off to the different colonies involved in the Culling Game. Given the urgency of the situation, no one took a moment to question whether or not Itadori was aware of their plan. As sorcerers, they understood that there was no time for mourning, as their focus was on the challenges and goals that lay ahead.
This is in line with the portrayal of sorcerers throughout the series and Yuji’s mindset as a small piece in a larger machine. He and his companions would agree that focusing on Nobara was not a priority when lives were in danger. Additionally, regardless of her ultimate destiny, the group was unable to protect her from the looming dangers.
This leads us to the period before the time skip in Jujutsu Kaisen, during which there would have been ample opportunity to inform Yuji about Nobara’s situation. However, the group was occupied with strategizing against Sukuna, to whom Yuji had a strong connection. This was emphasized through Mei Mei’s conversation with Todo, during which they speculated that Sukuna may be able to tap into Yuji’s memories.
It was specifically mentioned that this was the reason why Yuji was not informed about Todo’s return and his role in the ultimate confrontation against Sukuna in case Gojo was unable to defeat him. If they had revealed this information, Sukuna could have anticipated Todo’s involvement and prepared accordingly.
As Yuji was initially Sukuna’s vessel, he would have a thorough understanding of Todo’s Cursed Technique. Some may argue that Todo’s modifications to the ability after the Shibuya incident could have confused Sukuna, but it would not be worth the risk to rely on that possibility.
It is likely that Yuji was never informed of Nobara’s survival for a specific reason. If Sukuna had been able to access Yuji’s memories through their connection and discover that Nobara was still alive, he may have been able to anticipate her return and prepare accordingly. This would have greatly impacted his defeat, as he would not have been caught off guard. Therefore, it can be assumed that the reason for Yuji’s lack of knowledge was already explained by Akutami to fans.
