Yuqi of (G)I-DLE revealed in a show that she had initially considered YG and SM as her potential labels, but ultimately ended up signing with Cube Entertainment.
On July 12, fourth-generation idol Yuqi was featured as a special guest on BIGBANG Daesung’s YouTube web show, “ZIP DAESUNG.”The appearance was reported by Naver Entertainment.
On this day, the second-generation MC, alongside the female idol, shared with the audience the story of how she became a Cube artist. This was despite her initial consideration of signing with YG and SM.
Specifically, Yuqi disclosed that her top preference among agencies is YG Entertainment, stating:
“This is something I’ve never mentioned anywhere. When I was young, actually, I really, really liked 2NE1. So, my voice is low and husky so I thought, maybe I had a YG style?
When I used to do covers, I would take Minzy’s parts. But back then, (YG) didn’t have any auditions in China. That always felt like a pity.
Honestly, the first company I wanted to join was YG, my style.”
Despite the YG audition not being available in China at the time, Yuqi auditioned for both SM and Cube. She was accepted by both companies and ultimately decided to join Cube.
During the entire dialogue, Daesung has continuously playfully mocked her, stating:
“Did Cube give you money? Did they tell you that you’d immediately receive a small amount? I thought you chose Cube because you wanted to debut quickly.”
However, Yuqi clarified her reason:
“I thought Cube had a bit more of a girl crush vibe than SM. Also, Cube told me that, ‘If you sign, you can debut next year. Cube was the perfect choice.”
The female singer first stated that she did not regret joining her current label, but later changed her response and drew laughter when she said:
“Slightly? Hahaha”
During the ongoing conversation, Daesung brought up Miyeon, a co-member of Yuqi’s who had also trained under YG.
Yuqi was asked about her initial impression of Miyeon, to which she hilariously responded:
“She was a real YG trainee! We have talked about this so many times, but our company is kind of, it feels a bit soft and gentle, you know? If we had this training T-shirt look, Miyeon came in on the first day with a leather jacket, wearing Dr.Martens-like boots. So she was really strong. I don’t think she did it intentionally, but it seemed like there was a (YG) influence.”
Yuqi further discussed (G)I-DLE’s unique freestyle concept which distinguishes them from Cube’s initial fm and kind image. She stated:
“This was largely due to Soyeon’s role. Soyeon wrote the songs and created our concepts.”
