The highly anticipated movie, Yuri!! On Ice: ICE ADOLESCENCE, has been officially cancelled. The animation studio responsible for its production recently released a statement, expressing their apologies to fans worldwide for the disappointing news. This announcement was particularly disheartening, especially since the movie had been confirmed a long time ago.
Despite the backlash, the controversy surrounding the prioritization of one of the studio’s other projects did not end there for fans of Yuri!! On Ice. This was due to the recent airing of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, followed shortly after by the announcement of season 3 through a teaser for the Culling Games Arc. This decision has not been well-received by a portion of the anime community.
Jujutsu Kaisen and Yuri!! On Ice: A Controversial Cancellation
The creators of Yuri!! On Ice the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE announced on Friday that the film’s production has been halted. MAPPA and the film’s production committee clarified that the decision to cancel the movie was made by the staff and committee members after thorough internal deliberations, citing “various circumstances”as the reason.
The announcement for the film’s production was made in April 2017. The first season of the anime, consisting of 12 episodes, had originally premiered in Japan in October 2016. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired.
In September 2019, the staff announced that they were postponing the film’s 2019 release date. The decision was made in order to significantly increase the amount of content, beyond what was originally planned.
In a later update in 2020, the staff announced that work on the film production was still in progress with the goal of enhancing the overall quality. They also mentioned that they had not yet reached a point where they could announce a release date.
It has now been officially confirmed that the planned release of Yuri!! On Ice the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE has been cancelled.
Fans React to Jujutsu Kaisen’s Influence on Yuri!! On Ice Movie Cancellation
Despite the heartbreaking news of a seemingly endless 7-year wait for the announcement, fans were visibly disappointed and frustrated. Understandably, they took to social media to hold production for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 accountable for their actions.

“Love that the last update on the Yuri on Ice movie before this was in later 2019 going “okay we’re gonna delay it a bit”and then Jujutsu Kaisen started in 2020 and oops uh oh wuh oh MAPPA,”another user posted.
“Yuri on Ice made MAPPA what it is today AND it had OLYMPIC ATHLETES WORLDWIDE talking about it, referencing & loving it. And MAPPA just dropped it, once it became big enough with Jujutsu Kaisen getting into Guiness Record,”a netizen wrote.
Despite the announcement, fans expressed their dissatisfaction and attributed their disappointment to Jujutsu Kaisen. In fact, one user was so upset that they even went as far as blocking the official Jujutsu Kaisen X account after hearing the news.
Despite being stunned, another individual pointed out that Mitsurou Kubo’s series had gained popularity among Olympic athletes. As a result, they saw no justification for canceling the movie, especially since Jujutsu Kaisen had recently set a Guinness World Record.

“Don’t talk to me for the next few days…oh my God I mean I think we all knew this was coming but like…Yuri on ice was your bread and butter before aot and jujutsu kaisen. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you,”a fan posts.
“i hope all yuri on ice fans direct their frustration and anger towards mappa’s current pet project: jujutsu kaisen,”a user wrote.
Despite some feeling that MAPPA neglecting Yuri!! On Ice was like biting the hand that fed, since it has previously been credited with pushing MAPPA into the spotlight, a different user accepted the fate that Jujutsu Kaisen had taken the spot previously held by Yuri!! On Ice.
Overall, the recent announcement has caused significant dissatisfaction among fans. Despite the unknown reason behind it, a large number of fans feel that they have been waiting in vain for a long time. At present, it seems that there will not be a Yuri!! On Ice movie unless the studio has a sudden change of heart.
