Just over a month after releasing his Rebel Moon director’s cuts, Zack Snyder’s latest Netflix series has premiered, garnering a mixed but positive response from both critics and fans.
It’s been a challenging year for Zack Snyder. In December 2023, he launched his highly anticipated Netflix space opera saga with Rebel Moon Part 1, which, despite significant viewership, faced a disappointing reception from audiences.
So far this year, Snyder has unveiled three films: Rebel Moon Part 2, a marginally improved sequel, and R-rated, extended versions of the initial two installments. While these director’s cuts received better reviews, they struggled to gain traction on the streaming platform.
However, there is a silver lining: Twilight of the Gods, Snyder’s new animated series inspired by Norse mythology, is currently rated Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 60% score from critics and 78% from viewers.
It’s important to note that Snyder co-created the show alongside Jay Oliva and Eric Carrasco, while also directing the series’s opening episode and finale.
The official synopsis of Twilight of the Gods reveals that the story unfolds in a “mythical world of great battles, great deeds, and great despair,” where Leif, a mortal King, is rescued on the battlefield by Sigrid, a fierce warrior with whom he falls in love.
“On their wedding night, Sigrid and Leif must survive a terror unleashed by Thor, which propels them—and a crew of warriors—on a relentless quest for vengeance.”
In the series, Sigrid is voiced by Sylvia Hoeks (known from Blade Runner 2049), while Leif is portrayed by Stuart Martin (from Rebel Moon), and Thor is voiced by Pilou Asbæk (of Game of Thrones). Additionally, the voice cast includes Paterson Joseph, Rahul Kohli, Jamie Clayton, Lauren Cohan, and Corey Stoll.
One enthusiastic viewer tweeted, “Zack Snyder and Jay Oliva’s TWILIGHT OF THE GODS is a thrilling experience filled with passion and dedication from everyone involved. The art style and animation offer countless breathtaking moments. Season 2 can’t come soon enough!” Read More
Another viewer expressed, “Twilight of the Gods was pretty amazing; I even teared up during some character deaths,” while yet another commented, “Twilight of the Gods is the finest original content Zack Snyder has ever produced. It genuinely feels crafted with passion, showcasing incredible action, animation, and plot.” View Comment
