Patrick Soderlund, the CEO of Embark Studios, has emerged as a prominent advocate for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the realm of game development. He highlighted that the creation of their projects, Arc Raiders and The Finals, was achieved at a remarkably lower expense than typically associated with AAA titles.
In a recent briefing, which was reported by GamesRadar+, Soderlund discussed at length the advantages that AI can offer to the gaming industry. He expressed concern about how many larger corporations are misapplying AI technology.
“Every company has a plan; most will get it wrong. They’re committing big investments in tools – but tools won’t help because they’ve misread the challenge, ” Soderlund noted.“AI may be a race, but the winners won’t be the first movers – the winners will be the ones who understood the challenge.”
Cost Efficiency in Game Development with AI
Delving deeper into the efficiencies brought by AI, Soderlund explained that its implementation was pivotal in developing The Finals and Arc Raiders. The technology facilitated the streamlining of numerous processes throughout the development cycle.
“At Embark, we began with a clean slate, questioning all aspects from how to transition an idea into a greenlit project to determining what tasks should be performed manually versus those that could be handled more efficiently by machines. While AI is a part of that discussion, the focus is on fostering smarter practices, improved tools, and abandoning outdated methods, ” Soderlund elaborated.

Embark’s efforts clearly yielded positive results, as Soderlund shared that the two titles were developed with considerably fewer team members and at costs significantly lower than the norm for AAA games:
“The initial outcome of that process is two games: THE FINALS and then ARC Raiders. Two games, built with significantly fewer people, at a fraction of the cost you’d expect for a AAA game.”
As for the use of AI in Arc Raiders, it has generated notable attention, particularly in light of criticism regarding the AI-generated voice lines present in the game. Following its successful launch, the team opted to re-record some of these lines using professional voice actors, which Soderlund acknowledged have enhanced the overall audio quality.
