Highguard Executive Claims Player Count Is “Irrelevant”

Chad Grenier, the head of Highguard, emphasizes the importance of player affection over sheer numbers. In a candid interview with Polygon, Grenier and the talented team at Wildlight Entertainment discussed their design philosophy as they worked on the game, which features a dedicated group of approximately 60 developers known for their contributions to titles like Apex Legends and Titanfall.

The development process was marked by extensive exploration and experimentation. According to Grenier, after numerous concepts and ideas, the team believes they have developed something truly distinct.“I don’t think there’s a game out there that resembles ours, ” he asserted, noting that while similarities to other games may exist, the overall experience stands apart in the competitive gaming landscape.

Focus on Affection Over Numbers

Despite initial positive feedback, Highguard is navigating a rocky trajectory. Player engagement and Twitch viewership have significantly decreased, accompanied by a wave of negative reviews on Steam. Grenier maintains that the studio’s primary objective is to cultivate a game that resonates with its players.“Whether it attracts a thousand users or a hundred million, what truly matters is the love it receives from those who play it, ” he remarked.

This approach represents a significant departure from the success of Apex Legends, allowing the studio to take creative risks that might not have been viable under the guidance of Respawn Entertainment. Lead designer Mohammad Alavi noted, “One of the challenges of having Apex’s success is being tethered to it. We’re striving to foster creativity and innovation within the shooter genre.”

As an independent entity, CEO Dusty Welch believes that Wildlight Entertainment has the liberty to pursue its unique vision. He voiced the aspiration for Highguard to be cherished by a wide audience, aiming to foster a connection with players globally.
