On Tuesday afternoon, a significant road collapse in Omaha, Nebraska, resulted in a large sinkhole that engulfed two vehicles, leading to the temporary shutdown of traffic in the vicinity. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m.on February 24, in the Aksarben neighborhood, specifically near the intersection of 67th and Pacific Streets, as reported by Omaha Police Department Officer Sarah Martier.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that the sinkhole had formed just east of the intersection, with both vehicles having fallen into it. Fortunately, both drivers managed to escape their cars unharmed. The driver of a silver Dodge Ram pickup was able to exit the sinkhole independently, while he assisted the driver of a maroon Jeep SUV with help from nearby bystanders. Remarkably, no injuries were reported in relation to this incident.

Recovery and Traffic Advisory Following the Sinkhole Incident

Images captured from the scene illustrated the front ends of both vehicles protruding at an angle towards the lip of the sinkhole, highlighting the precarious nature of the situation. Authorities confirmed that both vehicles were subsequently removed and towed from the area.

In the wake of the collapse, traffic officials issued advisories indicating that Pacific Street was closed between 66th and 69th Streets. However, traffic continued to flow in both directions on 67th Street while road crews worked diligently to manage and rectify the situation.

The incident drew considerable attention online after CCTV footage from a University of Nebraska camera documented the moment the vehicles fell into the sinkhole, causing the footage to go viral on social media platforms.

This incident in Omaha follows a similar occurrence earlier in February, when a massive sinkhole in Shanghai swallowed an entire roadway near a subway construction site. Fortunately, that incident also resulted in no reported injuries.
