To maximize the potential of the Charge Blade, players must adeptly utilize its modes: Sword Mode and Axe Mode. The transition between these modes is essential for executing powerful attacks and protecting oneself in combat.

Initially, players start in Sword Mode, which allows for slashing attacks while also providing a shield for defense against enemy strikes. This dual functionality makes Sword Mode highly versatile.

Inflicting damage while in Sword Mode fills up Phials, located beneath the Sharpness meter. As players accumulate damage, the Phials will change color—from yellow to red—and eventually reach a bright red stage, where attacks will start to bounce off opposing monsters.

To harness the energy stored in the Phials, players can initiate a charge by pressing R2 (RT) + Circle (B). This action enhances the shield icon adjacent to the Phials, enabling attacks to deal increased damage. Furthermore, tapping this combination briefly will transfer the current charge to gray Phials, allowing for more potent charged sword attacks when holding Triangle (Y).

Once the Phials are fully charged, players can switch to Axe Mode by pressing R2 (RT) + Triangle (Y). This transformation allows for a significant increase in damage output and enables powerful elemental attacks executed with Circle (B), or specialized amplified attacks using Triangle (Y) + Circle (B).

Among the Charge Blade’s notable features is the Focus Slash: Double Rend, an advanced technique activated by maneuvering with L2 (LT) and tapping R1 (RB) on a monster’s red wound. This technique launches the Power Axe Mode, where successive attacks deliver multiplied damage, making it particularly effective against tougher monsters.
