On October 1, 2025, the highly anticipated Lego Game Boy set was unveiled, capturing the nostalgia of gaming enthusiasts everywhere. However, Australian modder Natalie the Nerd has taken this excitement to a whole new level by transforming the brick-built model into a fully functional gaming device.
The inception of the Lego Game Boy began at the San Diego Comic-Con in July, where Lego officially revealed the 421-piece set and opened preorders shortly afterward. Priced at $59.99, the set features swappable cartridges inspired by titles like Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, alongside lenticular screens that cleverly mimic motion. While the model allows for button pressing and cartridge insertion, Lego made it clear that it was not designed to actually play games.
Transforming the Lego Game Boy into a Playable Console
Against this backdrop, modder Natalie has ingeniously transformed the Lego Game Boy into a functional gaming console reminiscent of the 1990s. Rather than opting for common emulators or Raspberry Pi systems, she skillfully engineered a custom circuit board that incorporates authentic Game Boy chips, all compact enough to fit within the Lego frame.
A significant enhancement in her version is a backlit screen, making gameplay much clearer and more enjoyable. In her words, she stated:
I am a woman of my word. The Lego Game Boy – with a working Game Boy inside (not an emulator) https://t.co/IKORWOhaO4 pic.twitter.com/teMcLtrVLX

This innovative build not only supports real Game Boy cartridges but also incorporates operational buttons and utilizes a USB-C charging mechanism paired with a rechargeable battery. According to her interview with The Verge, Natalie had to strategically remove several bricks to accommodate the smallest available display kit. She is also working on creating custom 3D-printed components to mount the buttons effectively.
Though the project is still a work in progress, Natalie has expressed her intent to release the complete design once finalized. Renowned in the modding community for her aftermarket Game Boy components, she anticipates that the Lego Game Boy will become a prominent addition to her array of shared circuit board projects.
