Players of Marvel Rivals are expressing a strong desire for the game to incorporate a feature reminiscent of Overwatch’s character swap system, which provides notifications when teammates change heroes during gameplay.
The ability to switch characters mid-match has been a defining characteristic of Overwatch and its sequel since their inception. This mechanic offers both casual and competitive players greater flexibility, enabling roles to be adjusted on the fly, such as a Tank transitioning to Support during intense battles.
However, the adaptation of this mechanic in Marvel Rivals has not met player expectations, as one critical element common in its predecessors appears to be lacking.
Demand for Overwatch-style Hero Swap Notifications in Marvel Rivals
A user on Reddit made a compelling case that Marvel Rivals “desperately needs” dedicated voice lines that play each time a teammate switches characters. This feature fosters communication within the team, as demonstrated in Overwatch, where players receive global notifications like “Soldier 76 reporting for duty” upon character changes.
In Overwatch, these vocal alerts combined with text notifications ensure that every player remains informed about hero swaps among allies, enhancing strategic decision-making.
The absence of this communication tool in Marvel Rivals presents a significant challenge, particularly due to its lack of a strict role-lock system. Many players chimed in on the Reddit thread, recounting experiences that highlighted the necessity of such notifications.

One player shared a frustrating incident from a ranked match where their team had perfectly balanced roles with a 2-2-2 setup. However, following a couple of unfortunate team fights, one healer switched to a DPS role without communicating this change, leading to a disappointing match loss.
Another user echoed the sentiment, stating, “It actually pisses me off so bad when people swap and don’t say anything. We end up stuck with an ineffective composition and it’s too late to adjust.”
While some players mentioned the existence of sporadic voice lines, the lack of consistency and dependence on the player’s proximity to spawn points only adds to the confusion during intense moments.
As of now, NetEase Games has not clarified whether it plans to enhance the hero-switching feature. Nevertheless, it is clear that the Marvel Rivals community is advocating for robust notification options to better facilitate sudden role changes among players.
