Amazon is introducing a groundbreaking method for food ordering via Alexa+, enhancing the experience with a conversational delivery system that allows users to build and personalize their orders interactively.

This innovative feature is initially available for Grubhub and Uber Eats, enabling customers to effortlessly browse restaurant options, modify their selections, and place orders through an ongoing dialogue with Alexa, moving away from the conventional voice command approach.

Transforming Food Ordering with Alexa+

The new Alexa+ experience creates a dynamic dialogue space where users can dive into menus, add or customize items, and modify their orders without restarting commands. This adaptability enables customers to switch between restaurants, alter ingredients, or adjust quantities throughout the conversation, with Alexa reflecting these changes in real time.

“What excites us about Alexa+ is how it turns restaurant discovery and ordering into one seamless, conversational experience, ” said Tapojoy Chatterjee, VP of Product at Grubhub.

Chatterjee notes that customers can simply articulate their culinary cravings, ask queries, receive recommendations, and assemble their orders as they go. This offers a level of convenience for diners, while providing restaurant partners with another significant opportunity for visibility and a smooth transition from discovering to successfully placing an order.

Customers interested in this functionality must link their delivery accounts through the Alexa application. Upon successful connection, previous orders will sync automatically, allowing users to quickly reorder meals or initiate new orders simply by using voice commands.

Users can search by cuisine or specific restaurant names, define detailed customization requests for their carts, and explore various menu categories such as desserts or popular items through questions directed at Alexa. Before finalizing a purchase, Alexa offers a comprehensive checkout summary detailing item prices and the overall total cost.

Subsequent to placing an order, users can also track the delivery status through Alexa by simply requesting updates.

“At Uber Eats, we’re always looking for new ways to help customers discover and order the food they love. Partnering with Amazon on Alexa+ is an exciting step in exploring how conversational experiences can make ordering even easier, ” said Harshit Agarwal, Head of Uber Eats Product.“We’re proud to collaborate on innovations that meet customers wherever they are, while unlocking new ways for them to engage with our platform.”

The rolling out of this feature is targeted at Alexa+ users with Echo Show 8 devices and larger, marking a significant part of Amazon’s strategy toward adaptive AI interactions that dynamically adapt based on the task at hand.
