YouTube is introducing an innovative approach to combat advertisements by encouraging viewer participation in chat during livestreams. This new strategy aims to reduce the frequency of ads, especially as the platform has faced significant criticism for implementing unskippable ads that can run for up to 60 seconds.
Until now, users seeking an ad-free experience had limited options: they could subscribe to YouTube Premium, which recently increased its monthly subscription fee to $15.99, or utilize ad-blocking browsers like Brave. However, YouTube has unveiled a third alternative that allows viewers to engage collectively to mitigate ad interruptions.
New Engagement Features to Combat Ads
On April 13, YouTube announced in a blog post that they will temporarily hold back ads during livestreams when viewer engagement peaks. This can be achieved through active participation in the chat, which the platform aims to enhance by introducing features such as the ability for viewers to send gifts during both horizontal and vertical broadcasts. This gift feature is set to expand to several countries, including Canada, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand.
Streamers now also have the flexibility to go live in either format while sharing a unified chat experience, fostering a more interactive atmosphere. Notably, users contributing through Super Chat, Super Stickers, or gifts will enjoy a dedicated ad-free window, allowing for uninterrupted acknowledgment from the streamer.

Furthermore, this feature presents viewers with a unique opportunity to come together and create a shared ad-free experience during engaging moments in streams. YouTube’s system identifies peak engagement times in the live chat and automatically postpones ads, allowing the community to maintain its energy uninterrupted.
YouTube states, “This helps you keep the momentum going for the whole community without being broken up by an ad.” It is important to note that this functionality is activated only when automatic ads are enabled.
According to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, these enhancements are designed to enrich the streaming experience and empower creators financially. As these new tools roll out, the real test will be to see how effectively viewers and streamers can leverage them to foster an ad-free environment during broadcasts.
