Once celebrated as one of China’s premier actresses, Zheng Shuang faced a dramatic downfall, resulting in her permanent blacklisting in 2021. On the evening of September 18th, she quietly updated a newly created social media account, sharing her latest image. To prevent her account from being shut down by authorities, Zheng extensively edited her photo, leading many to mistakenly identify her as Dilraba Dilmurat. Chinese media reports indicate that new social media accounts established by celebrities who have been blacklisted due to scandals are closely monitored. Recently, Li Yifeng’s new account was blocked just six days after it was created, even though he refrained from showing his face in the posts. Consequently, Zheng felt compelled to “bend the rules” by digitally modifying her image to engage with her fans.
In her most recent post, Zheng expressed her ongoing pain and despair regarding her situation, stating: “Age or advice will never make someone mature or awakened. If you take the wrong path because you trust the wrong person, you will suffer, pay a heavy price, and fall into despair after placing your faith in the wrong person.” Online, many netizens speculated that Zheng was indirectly blaming her ex-boyfriend Zhang Heng for tarnishing her reputation and contributing to her present troubles. Others, however, expressed frustration, believing that Zheng was attempting to shirk responsibility and was clinging to the hope of returning to the entertainment industry instead of starting anew in the U.S.
At the end of August, Zheng attracted attention once again when she shared a tearful image featuring a lifeless expression on her 33rd birthday. She emphasized statements such as “time will reveal the truth,” “the past is gone, and the future no longer exists,” and “live well and let’s meet again.” Many social media users interpreted Zheng’s post as a cry for attention.
In early 2021, the flourishing career of Zheng Shuang unraveled after her ex-boyfriend Zhang Heng accused her of engaging in surrogacy and attempting to abort a 7-month-old fetus. She faced backlash not only for her alleged illegal actions but also for abandoning her twin children after their birth, alongside accusations of tax evasion. Zheng’s behavior incited public outrage, prompting Chinese authorities to impose a ban and blacklist her from the entertainment sector, causing her career to collapse overnight.
After her removal from the Chinese entertainment landscape, Zheng moved to the U.S., where she currently confronts multiple lawsuits for financial restitution. Despite consistently losing court cases and being ordered to compensate plaintiffs, Zheng has yet to fulfill these obligations. Reports suggest she has fled from creditors in the U.S. Currently, Zheng is said to be grappling with personal debts amounting to 120 million yuan (approximately 17 million USD).
Accused of evading debts, Zheng took to social media to reveal her situation, lamenting that she is bankrupt, surviving on her parents’ retirement funds, and unable to settle her debts. “I’m out of money, broke, and heavily in debt after the scandal. I’m currently unemployed and relying on my parents’ retirement funds to survive. I never had the 230 million yuan (approximately 32 million USD) that’s being circulated online. If I had that much, I wouldn’t be in such a difficult position, struggling with the legal battle for custody of my children with Zhang Heng due to a lack of financial resources. Every month, I have to submit financial reports to the court in hopes of altering the custody situation,” Zheng shared about her challenging life in the U.S.
With her mounting debts, Zheng fears returning to China. In early July, she was placed on a blacklist of those with bad debts and prohibited from making luxury purchases in China due to her low social credit score.
