10 Anime That Need Remakes as Soon as Possible, Ranked

One of the most frequently discussed topics within the online anime community is the idea of remaking certain anime series. This is a highly debated topic that can evoke strong emotions from fans. Some argue for remakes based on the potential improvement in animation quality, while others advocate for a more faithful adaptation of the original source material.

Despite the fact that the anime industry often serves as a promotional tool for the manga industry, there is a challenge in justifying remakes for certain anime. This is due to the fact that many of these series have already concluded their manga counterparts, making it difficult to justify the need for a remake. However, there are still 10 standout anime that are in dire need of a remake, listed below in order of urgency.

Reimagining Classic Anime: The Need for Remakes in Dragon Ball, Soul Eater, and Other Beloved Series

The Promised Neverland

Despite being one of the most recent anime on this list, The Promised Neverland is also one that is in desperate need of a remake. This is due to CloverWorks’ mistake in deviating so far from the original source material in the second season, making it difficult for the two to be reconciled.

The decision to omit the Goldy Pond arc is a significant loss for many readers of author Kaiu Shirai and illustrator Posuka Demizu’s manga. Considered by some to be one of the greatest shonen arcs of all time, the absence of this arc means that the series will never truly be a faithful adaptation of the manga. This undoubtedly warrants prompt revision.

Inuyasha

In the eyes of most Western anime fans born in the 1990s, Inuyasha is often considered one of their first anime series. As a work of legendary mangaka Rumiko Takahashi, it is seen as one of the many anime that could greatly benefit from a remake for several reasons. One of the most prominent reasons is its potential for improved animation quality, as seen in The Final Act and the Yashahime sequel anime.

A remastered version of the series has the potential to bring back viewers who were fans of the original series, especially those who are now adults with disposable income. This could also reignite interest in the sequel series, Yashahime. Additionally, a remake could improve the pacing of the series and eliminate filler episodes that are not well-received.

Zatch Bell!

Out of all the anime that have been mentioned so far, Zatch Bell! is the first one that truly warrants a remake in the context of the anime industry’s goals. This is because the original creator, Makoto Raiku, is currently releasing a sequel manga series. Therefore, a remake of the original could potentially spark interest among fans and encourage them to purchase the volumes of the sequel manga.

Additionally, it should be noted that the original adaptation was both incomplete and poorly altered during the localization process. Although this may only be applicable to the Western market, it is still an important aspect to consider given the widespread reach of the medium in today’s society.

Soul Eater

Similar to Inuyasha, Soul Eater is often recommended as a “beginner anime”by fans in the Western world. However, unlike Inuyasha, the animated version of Atsushi Ohkubo’s original manga series takes a different storyline that strays from the source material early on and never fully reconnects in a significant manner.

In addition, the series has a devoted fanbase that has remained loyal and dedicated despite its age. This further supports the argument that it is one of many anime that could benefit from a remake. While there may be other series that are more deserving, there are also some that are not as deserving in comparison.

Deadman Wonderland, part of Adult Swim’s initial Toonami revival lineup, was a high-octane, ultraviolent series that captivated audiences. It was one of the first anime to feature extreme violence and was met with criticism due to its limited international exposure. However, with the rise in popularity of series like Chainsaw Man and Attack on Titan, the perception of using graphic gore and blood in anime has shifted.

The anime’s lack of a complete adaptation and unresolved ending make it an obvious candidate for a remake. Although the manga has already ended at the time of this writing, the anime’s popularity, particularly among Western audiences, suggests that a remake would likely boost manga sales.

Similarly, the television adaptation of Hiroya Oku’s Gantz was equally ahead of its time due to its intense violence and bleak storyline. Despite the manga showcasing the series’ full potential and entertainment value, the anime only covers the initial major story arcs that establish protagonist Kei Kurono’s character.

In addition to the reasons shared with Deadman Wonderland for justifying a remake, the series’ final arcs feature large set-pieces that would greatly benefit from modern animation. Furthermore, the numerous projects released for the series since the original conclusion of the manga indicate a sustained interest in the story, further supporting the justification for a remake.

Anime: Dragon Ball

In March of this year, fans of Akira Toriyama were devastated by his sudden passing. In tribute to his legacy, many who were introduced to his work through the Dragon Ball Z anime have turned to the original Dragon Ball series. This is happening to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the series and a reprint of the manga, further honoring Toriyama’s memory.

Given all of these factors, it is clear that a remake of Dragon Ball is necessary and should be prioritized. Not only would it serve as a fitting farewell to Toriyama and the original era of the franchise, but it would also greatly benefit from modern animation. With Toyotaro, Akio Iyoku, and other talented individuals leading the way, there is no doubt that a remake would be a success. Therefore, it is a logical decision to include Dragon Ball on the list of animes that require remakes.

Claymore

Despite initially going unnoticed upon its release, Claymore has since become a cult classic among both dedicated and casual anime fans. This is a common trend for many anime that require remakes, with its unique blend of genres and strong female protagonist making it one of the most influential shonen manga of all time.

Despite its well-produced and relatively faithful 26-episode first season, the lack of attention it received prevented a sequel from being made. Although the manga has finished, the anime remains relevant in today’s medium.

Tokyo Ghoul

When it comes to anime that are in dire need of remakes, few are as deserving as the adaptation of Sui Ishida’s Tokyo Ghoul manga series. Despite season 1 being considered the most faithful part of the anime, it still strays from the source material, ultimately diminishing the overall viewing experience. This issue is amplified in season 2, originally intended as a “what-if”finale for the anime adaptation.

Despite the pressure from the series’ popularity, the staff was compelled to keep producing the anime, resulting in a convoluted and disjointed plot as they attempted to align it with the original source material.

Berserk

Out of all the anime mentioned here, the late Kentaro Miura’s Berserk is undoubtedly the most deserving of a remake. Its iconic status cannot be emphasized enough, as Miura’s manga is widely regarded as one of the most influential works in the dark fantasy genre. Even popular current series such as Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and the previously mentioned Claymore have been inspired by Berserk’s groundbreaking take on the genre.

In addition, although the 1997 anime adaptation is well-received, the 2016 sequel series has faced criticism from both reviewers and fans. Despite the passing of Miura and the lack of a satisfactory full adaptation, the series remains incredibly popular and is undoubtedly the most deserving and in need of a remake compared to other anime mentioned here and in general.

In summation

Despite the plethora of anime that fans believe should be remade, the aforementioned 10 are consistently mentioned and acknowledged by the general anime community. Of course, individual fans may have their own personal attachments or strong opinions towards other anime that require a remake. Nevertheless, the 10 series listed above remain among the most frequently cited and concurred upon anime in need of a remake.
