As we approach the end of the fifth episode of 1923 Season 2, a wave of criticism has emerged from the fandom, with many expressing their discontent over what they deem “ridiculous” plot developments. However, it appears that our enjoyment of this season may actually surpass that of the inaugural season.
Some viewers feel that creator Taylor Sheridan is pushing too hard to craft a distinctive narrative for Season 2. Others have voiced concerns regarding certain story arcs, particularly Spencer’s conflicts with the Mafia and the recurring portrayal of Elizabeth as a “damsel in distress.”
A quick glance at Reddit following the release of a new episode reveals a torrent of complaints, overshadowing any positive discussions. Yet, is it possible that we are misjudging Season 2 entirely? A closer analysis of its reception against Season 1 could provide some perspective.
Soaring Viewership for Season 2
Despite the critical reception, the viewership numbers tell a different story. In fact, 1923 Season 2 has experienced a remarkable boost, with ratings soaring by 56% compared to its predecessor at this same point in time.

According to data from Paramount, as reported by Comic Basics, the premiere of Season 2 attracted 17 million viewers globally, marking a striking 41% rise compared to Season 1’s premiere during the same timeframe.
On its debut day alone, the season drew an impressive 5.4 million viewers, representing an astonishing 146% increase. With four episodes still pending, it will be interesting to see how these figures evolve leading up to the season finale. But why do viewers express frustration despite the escalating viewership?
“The Spencer and Alex effect has captivated audiences. Many who were previously indifferent to Yellowstone have spent two years discovering their chemistry, and they want to follow their journey, ”noted one fan reflected on Reddit. Another viewer added, “I love the series; I just want to see Alex and Spencer arrive at Dutton Ranch.”
One comment encapsulated a common sentiment: “While it’s a great series overall, if it takes them 7.5 episodes to reach home, it detracts from the experience unless there’s a Season 3! The absence of Spencer and Bride at Yellowstone reduces the enjoyment of an otherwise stellar cast.1883 felt like The Oregon Trail, but 1923 is resembling Jumanji.”
While we know the possibility of 1923 Season 3 remains uncertain, it is often advisable in the realm of television to never say never, especially with someone like Taylor Sheridan at the helm.
