A 20-year-old digital designer has transformed his virtual world-building passion into reality by establishing a self-proclaimed nation on unclaimed territory nestled between Croatia and Serbia.
According to the New York Post, British citizen Daniel Jackson has founded the Free Republic of Verdis, a micronation that occupies approximately 0.5 km² of a forested area along the Danube River. This location, informally referred to as “Pocket Three, ” lies within a disputed region not officially claimed by either Croatia or Serbia.
Jackson’s journey began at the age of 14 when the concept emerged as an experimental venture shared with friends.“It was just a bit of an experiment at first, ” he reminisced, adding, “We all dreamed of creating something crazy.” By May 2019, he declared Verdis independent and took significant steps towards establishing governance at 18, crafting laws and designing a national flag.
The Journey from Roblox to Nationhood

Since its inception, Verdis has cultivated a distinctive identity, complete with its flag, currency, a passport system, and a governing cabinet. Approximately 400 individuals have been welcomed as citizens. Jackson remarked, “We have now built up a government and have a great cabinet.”
In a significant development in 2023, Croatian authorities detained Jackson and several settlers as they attempted to access the territory. Following this incident, he faced deportation and received a lifetime entry ban into Croatia.“They deported us but couldn’t give a reason why, ” he stated.“They claimed we posed a threat to homeland security.”
Despite these hurdles, Jackson continues to steer Verdisonline, focusing on expanding recognition and establishing diplomatic relations, particularly with Serbia. Undeterred by legal obstacles, he remains committed to his vision for Verdis, stating, “If successful, I would step down from my position and call an election. I am not interested in power at all; I just want to be a normal citizen.”
While the territory may seem unremarkable at first glance, Jackson believes it carries profound significance.“To the naked eye, it is just a lot of forest, ” he explained, “but when you realize that you are in a country you have created, it is magical.”
