As Pokémon approaches its momentous 30th anniversary, the franchise is delighting fans with the return of the beloved ‘fat Pikachu’ design. This nostalgic plushie of the iconic Electric-type Pokémon will be released in collaboration with Takara Tomy, a renowned Japanese toy manufacturer, to celebrate this milestone.

Originally launched on February 27, 1996, with the release of Pokémon Red and Green on the Game Boy, the series has captivated audiences for three decades. With just over a month remaining until the big celebration, Pokémon enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the lineup of special merchandise.

The Iconic Fat Pikachu Makes a Comeback

One standout item from this upcoming collection is the life-sized ‘fat Pikachu’ plush, which has already taken social media by storm. Fans are rejoicing at its chubby, spherical form, reminiscent of Pikachu’s original appearance in early Pokémon games.

Officially named the ’30th Anniversary Okaeri Pikachu plushie, ’ the title incorporates the Japanese term ‘Okaeri, ’ which translates to ‘Welcome home’ or ‘Welcome back, ’ enhancing the emotional connection for fans.

The reaction online has been incredibly enthusiastic. Fans have taken to platforms like X to share their excitement, with one user expressing, “Omg, please let this plush come to the US!” Another chimed in, saying, “I want it omg, ” while a third user dubbed the plush “Absolutely PEAK.”

In addition to the fat Pikachu plush, Takara Tomy will also introduce a smaller, palm-sized Pikachu featuring a slimmer design that lights up and produces sounds. This variety offers fans multiple ways to celebrate their love for the franchise.

The starter figures will be available starting February 28, 2026.According to PokeJungle, while these items will initially launch in Japan, international fans may find ways to purchase them through third-party retailers.

Interestingly, Pikachu’s rounder design was phased out during Generation III to enhance the character’s expressiveness and movement in the animated series. However, this ‘chonky’ appearance was recently revived in the games through its Gigantamax form, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from the fanbase.
