On April 24th, “Challengers”was released, a film that centers around a professional tennis champion (Mike Faist) who is determined to make a comeback with the support of his wife (Zendaya), a former tennis prodigy who had to end her career due to an injury. As he faces off against his former best friend and his wife’s former lover (Josh O’Connor), the film is directed by Luca Guadagnino, renowned for his work on “Call Me by Your Name”. This release marks Guadagnino’s latest project in the past 2 years.
Despite facing tough competition from a Hollywood blockbuster, “The Roundup: Punishment”has been successful and now the question arises as to whether it can surpass 10 million viewers.
“For the opening weekend, “The Roundup: Punishment”featuring Ma Dong-seok earned the top spot in global box office profits.”
According to Comscore’s report on April 30th, ABO Entertainment, an investment and distribution company, announced that “The Roundup: Punishment”(directed by Heo Myung-haeng, produced by Bigpunch Pictures, etc.) had the highest global box office earnings during its opening weekend, bringing in $24.36 million (₩33.6 billion) in just six countries.
During the same time frame, the creature movie “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” earned $22.1 million (₩30.5 billion) in 79 countries, while Zendaya’s “Challengers”earned $24.01 million (₩33.1 billion) in 53 countries, making it the top earner.
“Prior to its release, “Challengers”was pre-sold in 164 countries, breaking the series’ previous pre-sale record and highlighting the worldwide anticipation for the film.”
On April 24th, the opening day of “The Roundup: Punishment,”the film drew in a staggering 820,000 viewers, setting a new record for the highest opening among all releases this year. Within five days, it had reached 4.2 million viewers, surpassing the breakeven point of 3.5 million and successfully recovering its production costs.
“The Roundup: Punishment”showcases a heightened effort to combat crime, spearheaded by the monster detective Ma Seok-do and his team of cybercrime investigators, in order to capture the largest illegal online gambling syndicate in Korea. This installment marks the fourth in the ongoing “The Roundup”series that debuted in 2017.
The movie includes Ma Dong-seok, Kim Mu-yeol, Park Ji-hwan, Lee Dong-hwi, and other actors such as Lee Joo-bin.
