A Freezing Rod Quest Guide: Breath of the Wild

In Breath of the Wild, each creature has its own subspecies. For example, in addition to conventional Lizalfos, there are Ice-Breath and Fire-Breath Lizalfos. Silver Monsters are formidable foes, and it is not advised that players engage them until they have acquired sturdier armor and weapons. The Wizzrobe foes are not an exception to this rule.

In Breath of the Wild, there are three varieties of Wizzrobes: ice, fire, and electric. When they are defeated, they drop elemental rod weapons. Link will need the Ice variant of the Chilling Rod to complete the sidequest. However, this secondary quest offers a greater reward for those who are willing to put in the extra effort.

Before they can accept this sidequest, players must first locate the Korok Forest. North of Hyrule Castle is the Great Hyrule Forest. Players must follow the trail leading to the Lost Forests. Flying into the Great Hyrule Forest is impossible. Follow the direction of the flames as you enter the Lost Woods. Link will eventually need to use a flashlight to illuminate the path. If he veers off course, he will return to the beginning.

Once players approach the Korok Forest, the Sheikah Sensor will alert them to the presence of a Shrine. Approach the Shrine and activate it to unlock a Travel Point to Korok Forest. The player must then approach the Great Deku Tree and observe a cutscene. If a player has 13 souls, he or she can pull the Master Sword from its pedestal.

At the base of the Deku Tree, directly ahead, is a Korok named Kula. Conversation with him will activate the “Freezing Rod.” Show Kula an Ice rod weapon to conclude the side objective. Here is something to remember:

  • Bring Kula an Ice Rod, he’ll give Link 100 rupees as a reward.
  • Bring Kula a Blizzard Rod, Link will get 300 rupees instead.

Ice Rod vs. Blizzard Rod

Like all other weapons in the game, Ice Rods and Blizzard Rods cannot be purchased from any vendor. They are also not found abandoned in the environment. Link must vanquish Ice Wizzrobes or Blizzrobes in order to obtain one. The only difference between these foes is that the Blizzrobe has a blue pattern on its front, while the Ice Wizzrobe does not.

A Blizzard Wizzrobe will drop a Blizzard Rod while an Ice Wizzrobe will drop an Ice Rod. To cast an ice ball with an Ice/Blizzard Rod equipped, depress and release the R button. If Link uses a Blizzard Rod, it will discharge three ice balls rather than one. The damage yield of these two weapons also differs, with Blizzard Rods being more powerful. Due to its ice-based attacks, fire foes such as the Fire-Breath Lizalfos are instantaneously destroyed when struck.

Equip an Ice/Snow Rod if Link is exploring a heated area such as the Gerudo Wasteland. This will provide climate-relevant thermal resistance of level 1. They are not very beneficial in the region’s hottest areas.

Where to Find Ice Wizzrobe and Blizzrobe

In Majora’s Mask, Wizzrobes served as minibosses. This is not the case in Breath of the Wild. Before pursuing Wizzrobes, players should purchase Fire Arrows or at the very least stock their inventory with a fire-based weapon. Wizzrobes can be fought ordinarily just like any other monster, but since they can be killed in a single hit, Fire Arrows are recommended.

East of Hyrule Castle, in the Crenel Hills, resides an Ice Wizzrobe. If players don’t care about rupees, they should come here to obtain the Ice Rod, as it’s not too far from the Korok Forest.

Those who are willing to travel should search for a Blizzrobe. There is one in the Hebra Mountains close to the Goma Asaagh Shrine (refer to the skull stamp on the above image). If players are warping to the Goma Asaagh Shrine, they should use Fire Arrows or a fire weapon to melt just enough ice for Link to pass. Use Revali’s Gale instead to fly over them. Link will be unable to scale the Shrine’s surrounding ramparts.

From the Goma Asaagh Shrine, ascend the path to the right. A Blizzrobe will be seen frolicking about. Use a fire projectile to destroy the target. Be certain to collect the Blizzard Rod it drops. It would be futile to travel to the Hebra Mountains for no reason.

Return to Kula to conclude “A Freezing Rod” formally.

Again, based on the elemental rod, Kula will give either 100 rupees (Ice Rod) or 300 rupees (Fire Rod) (Blizzard Rod). After completing a mission, players may discard the rod if they no longer require it.

Breath of the Wild is accessible on Nintendo Switch.
