Understanding the Dutton family’s fierce protectiveness over their legacy makes their violent and relentless battles more comprehensible. However, one particular rivalry has left Yellowstone fans puzzled about its origins.
The conflict begins in Season 4 of the Taylor Sheridan series within the bunkhouse. Following the arrival of Jimmy’s girlfriend and her friend Laramie in Season 3, she shifts her romantic interest from Lloyd to the younger, moody character Walker.
Unsurprisingly, Lloyd is not pleased, especially since Walker has no qualms about flaunting his new relationship right in front of the older, more experienced ranch hand. This tension escalates into a full-blown fight in Episode 6, culminating in Lloyd stabbing Walker in the shoulder.
While Walker survives, Lloyd’s reputation takes a hit, disappointing Rip and making for compelling television. However, upon reflection, this storyline’s significance diminishes when viewed through a different lens.
As some fans have pointed out, the rivalry between Lloyd and Walker seems trivial when primarily centered around Laramie. A more engaging storyline could have focused on the contrasting histories and connections both men have to the ranch, which might have lent the fight greater weight.
“I have no idea WHY they chose this strange jealousy angle ESPECIALLY since Laramie is young enough to be Lloyd’s daughter,” said one commenter on Reddit. “It could have been more impactful if Walker symbolized a challenge to Lloyd’s values, returning with the brand and his own ideas.”
Another fan remarked: “I thought they were going for the theme of ‘old ideas vs new.’ There was so much potential there. Walker, feeling important for surviving with the brand, contrasting with Lloyd’s traditional views and the practicality of those ideas.”
“That storyline was perhaps the weakest, and that’s saying a lot,” expressed another viewer. “Lloyd came off as a ridiculous character, and it diminished his appeal for me.”
In the end, all conflicts are resolved, and Lloyd and Walker reach an understanding. As Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 prepares to wrap up the series in November, fans will eagerly anticipate how these relationships evolve.
