Born in 1992, Young J is currently 31 years old. During his first military service examination in 2011, he received a Grade 3 classification due to an ankle joint abnormality. Those with an ankle angle measuring 18 degrees or more are considered unfit for active duty and are instead assigned to serve in the military as social service workers.

Despite this, it was observed that his ankle rotation angle fell below the required minimum, measuring between 16 and 17 degrees.

Despite being classified as Grade 3, he was unable to evade active duty and therefore shared the news of his enlistment with those around him in 2018 and 2020. He took to social media to announce his “last regular dance classes before going to the military”and expressed his appreciation for those who had supported him. However, in the end, he did not end up enlisting.

In August 2020, during the second half of the year, he was evaluated at a mental health clinic and diagnosed with conversion disorder and panic disorder. Despite not having joined the military, he spent a month at different hospitals and received medication during the first three months of 2021. According to reports, his most recent hospital visit was in March 2021.

Young J was given a Grade 4 classification due to a mental illness, resulting in his exemption from military service for nearly three years since the initial judgment. As per current military regulations, individuals who receive a Grade 4 classification after a physical examination are exempt from service if they have not been assigned to serve for more than three years following the judgment. As such, he is currently awaiting a review for exemption in July.

According to Young J’s lawyer, the situation has not improved. They also mentioned that Young J has been neglecting his physical and mental well-being by staying up all night to work on choreography instead of seeking treatment.

Despite receiving criticism for not being able to join the military, the dancer continued to teach dance classes and even competed on Mnet’s “Street Man Fighter.”He also participated in the derivative show, “Street Dance Girls Fighter.”
