While Episode 1 and Episode 2 of Agatha All Along set the stage for the perilous adventure Agatha and her coven must embark on to attain their heart’s desires, Episode 3 delivers a chilling glimpse into the treacherous path to power.
The witches are certainly far from the Scarlet Witch‘s Westview, as their initial task on the witches’ journey forces them to confront their deepest, darkest fears.
Episode 3 also drops one of the most significant hints regarding who the potential main antagonist of the series could be, so let’s dive into the details of the episode. But first, a warning: major spoilers ahead!
The Journey Begins
The episode kicks off with the title card, “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials,” signaling to viewers that the coven will face numerous obstacles on their quest for ultimate power.
Each member of the coven reacts differently to being on the witches’ road. Teen remarks that it was “just like I imagined it,” while Lilia and Alice express disbelief, having never thought the road was real.
Sharon interrupts their conversation by accusing them of kidnapping her, attempting to use her cell phone to “involve local authorities.” Unfortunately, Verizon’s coverage doesn’t extend to magical dimensions.
Lilia, Alice, and Jennifer then remind the group that they were pursued into the road’s cellar doors by Salem’s Seven, the show’s current big bad.
Jennifer dismisses the group’s existence as “Agatha’s problem,” but Alice points out that the Seven are now a collective issue they must face, prompting Teen to suggest, “covens share blessings and burdens alike,” hinting at a witches’ code.
While Sharon clings to the belief that they are beneath Westview, Jennifer confronts Agatha for bringing a non-witch along, claiming it “puts us all in danger since we don’t know what we’re up against.”
Lilia then recalls the phrase “tame your fears” from the Witches’ Ballad, realizing that the coven must confront their worst nightmares in the form of trials along the road to reach their destination.
The group seeks clarification from Agatha on the trials, and she explains that each stop will test the skills and knowledge of a single witch, putting them all in jeopardy but granting one the power to save everyone.
Teen expresses excitement about experiencing true witchcraft, leading Jennifer to question his identity, which remains concealed behind a mysterious sigil.
Realizing a sigil spell has been cast on Teen to hide his identity, Lilia initially suspects Agatha, who denies it.
Teen is unaware of what a sigil is or that he is under a spell, prompting Alice to explain its purpose of obscuring someone from witches.
As a popular theory suggests Teen may be Wanda Maximoff’s son, the sigil could be concealing his identity from Agatha. Another theory about Teen will arise later.
The group wishes to break the sigil to reveal Teen’s identity and the caster, but Agatha redirects their focus to navigating the trials ahead, agreeing to investigate later.
The coven is eager to proceed but halts when they realize Sharon has wandered away during the interrogation.
Believing she’s still in the mortal realm, Sharon finds a mossy tree trunk and sets her purse down, contemplating her next move.
Suddenly, a black ooze tries to suck her purse into its depths. As Sharon attempts to retrieve it, the ooze nearly pulls her in until Alice intervenes just in time.
Agatha then outlines the first rule of their journey: stay on the road unless you want to face death.
The group reaffirms their unity, and soon Jennifer spots a beach house by the ocean, signaling they have reached their first trial.
Life’s a Beach
Upon approaching the house, they notice door markings representing the moon’s phases, with the full moon phase highlighted.
The coven enters the unlocked home, where their outfits magically transform into beach attire. Agatha explains the road adapts to the coven, indicating such transformations will occur throughout their journey.
While investigating the house, Teen discovers an elegant card on the fireplace that reads, “The Witches’ Road cordially invites you to the First Trial.”
When Jennifer flips it, she finds a riddle: “My age has no value. I’m no fun alone. I mess with your mind. My tricks are well-known.”
Sharon then discovers a wine bottle with five glasses, and the coven decides to drink it, believing the riddle points towards it.
The group splits into pairs to search for a corkscrew, during which Jennifer warns Teen to “watch your back with Agatha.”
Teen brushes off her caution, leading Jennifer to reveal that the magical community believes Agatha traded her son Nicholas for the Darkhold, also known as the Book of the Damned.
Teen’s reaction suggests he is either incredulous that the witch he admires could commit such an evil act or that there may be more to his identity as the theory surmises.
Jennifer continues, explaining no one knows Nicholas’s fate; many suspect he’s either dead, a demon, or an agent of Mephisto, Marvel’s devil figure.
This marks the first mention of Mephisto in the MCU, as fans previously believed he would play a significant role in WandaVision due to his comic book ties with the Scarlet Witch. The implications of the devil’s role in this universe remain uncertain, but it’s clear he will factor into the storyline.
Down the Hatch
After retrieving the corkscrew, Agatha, Sharon, Lilia, Alice, and Jennifer drink some of the wine, while Teen cannot because of his age.
Sharon downs two glasses quickly to cope with the stress of their situation, triggering a 30-minute timer that indicates the trial has officially begun.
As the other women sip their wine, Agatha discreetly pours hers into a houseplant, only for it to refill magically, reflecting the road’s requirement that everyone must drink to progress.
The coven begins to bond over conversation, with Teen inquiring about a tattoo on Alice signifying curses warding.
Alice explains her mother insisted on the tattoo when they lived in Colorado at age 13 because “all of the women in my family are cursed,” to which Teen replies, “A lot happened to me at 13 too.” This adds another layer to the mystery surrounding Teen’s identity.
The light-hearted conversation halts when Jennifer notices Sharon’s face swelling dramatically; one by one, each woman, except Agatha, begins to experience the same symptom.
Jennifer deduces that the wine has been tainted with Alewife’s Revenge poison, warning the group they need to find an antidote quickly or face rapid heart racing, hallucinations, and ultimately death.
Agatha attempts to escape the house by throwing a candlestick at the window, but it merely cracks the glass.
Sharon eventually collapses from the poison, prompting the group to convince Agatha to drink the wine, thus allowing them to participate in the trial as a unified coven.
Being the potion expert, Jennifer takes the lead, pairing the group to gather the necessary ingredients for the antidote.
The Nightmares Come to Life
While searching for petroleum, Lilia enters a trance, repeating “Try to save Agatha” to Agatha herself but snaps back before explaining her cryptic statement.
Teen and Alice hunt for eucalyptus, leading them to the sauna. Inside, Alice hallucinates her missing mother, August, who laments she “can’t protect” Alice from the threats affecting their family.
Meanwhile, Jennifer finds herself in the kitchen, attempting to convert the deep sink into a makeshift cauldron when she is accosted by a vintage-looking doctor who labels her an “inconvenient woman” while trying to drown her.
Lilia follows a young girl in regal attire into a room where she discovers a corpse dressed similarly, only for the body to open its eyes and reveal a hooded skeleton emerging behind her.
As she flees the room, Lilia encounters Agatha, screaming in Italian, “She’s dead! They’re all dead!”
Eventually, the group reconvenes in the kitchen, with each member sharing experiences of their personal hallucinatory torment, except Agatha, who is only beginning to feel the effects of the poison.
Cooking Up a Cure
After they pour their gathered ingredients into the sink in the correct order, the concoction turns pink, raising Jennifer’s alarm as she realizes they need to boil it for the proper cerulean hue, indicating safety for consumption.
Teen rushes off to find a sous vide, explaining he knows about it because “his dad loves his.”
Jennifer instructs Teen to stir the mixture counterclockwise with his dominant hand since he is the only one unpoisoned and capable of proper motor function.
Jennifer instructs everyone to add a strand of hair to the mixture; however, Agatha succumbs to her own hallucination, encountering a vision of a baby crib.
Upon checking inside, she finds the Darkhold instead of the baby she fears will be there.
Teen, noticing Agatha’s distressed expression, inquires about her vision, leading Agatha to dismiss him, which he finds unsettling.
After adding everyone’s hair, the concoction turns green, alarming the group as the timer dwindles to just two minutes until they meet their demise.
As panic sets in, Agatha encourages Jennifer, asserting that even without her magic, “No one can take away your knowledge.”
Agatha deduces that the antidote requires blood from the unaffected, prompting them to cut Teen’s hand over the sink, finally turning the mixture cerulean.
Every witch, including the unconscious Sharon, drinks the antidote, resulting in the kitchen oven’s door opening to a path back to the road, just as seawater begins to flood the house through the cracked window.
As the group celebrates their escape and Jennifer takes pride in their survival, Teen somberly points out, “Sharon’s dead.”
Episodes 1 through 3 of Agatha All Along are currently streaming on Disney Plus.
