What Makes a Pokemon a “Baby” Pokemon?

None

A baby Pokemon is not only the initial stage of its evolutionary line, but it also belongs to the No Eggs Discovered Egg Group, unlike its evolutions. In simpler terms, baby Pokemon cannot breed, but their evolutions can. For example, Eevee, which can evolve and produce Eggs, is not considered a baby Pokemon, whereas Riolu, which can evolve but cannot produce Eggs like its evolution Lucario, falls under the category of baby Pokemon.

How to Get Baby Pokemon

In every Pokemon game, there are various methods for obtaining baby Pokemon. These can include encountering them in the wild or receiving them as presents from non-player characters, often in the form of Eggs that must be hatched. Additionally, some baby Pokemon can be obtained as a reward for completing certain tasks, such as earning the shiny Munchlax for mastering Ogre Oustin’ in The Teal Mask.

The predominant and reliable method of obtaining baby Pokemon is through breeding their evolved forms and subsequently hatching the Egg that is produced. However, there are instances where the Pokemon must be equipped with a specific Incense item in order for the resulting Egg to contain a baby Pokemon.

Why do Some Pokemon Need Incense to Make Baby Pokemon Eggs?

Some items, called Incense, have an added benefit in battles and also enable Pokemon to produce eggs with their baby Pokemon. However, not all evolutionary lines with a baby stage have a corresponding Incense. Incense is specifically used for baby Pokemon that were introduced after the second generation, like Azurill and Munchlax. Baby Pokemon that were introduced in the second generation or at the same time as their evolutions do not have any associated Incense, such as Riolu and Toxel.

Why was Incense necessary for cross-generation baby Pokemon after Gen. 2? Its primary purpose was to maintain consistency with previous generations. When Pokemon Eggs and breeding were first introduced in Pokemon Gold and Silver, the only way to obtain baby Pokemon was through Eggs. This prevented any changes to existing evolutionary lines. This same principle can be seen with cross-generational evolutions. For example, Gallade and Froslass were not discovered in Ruby and Sapphire along with their pre-evolutions Ralts and Snorunt because the Dawn Stone item did not exist at that time.

Starting in Ruby and Sapphire, this method no longer applied to baby Pokemon. In Gold and Silver, Marill and Azumarill were able to produce Marill Eggs, but there was a dilemma when it came to introducing a new baby Pokemon, Azurill. The solution was to incorporate Incense items. This allowed Pokemon like Marill and Azumarill to produce Azurill Eggs, as long as one of them was holding the “newly discovered”Sea Incense while in Day Care. If not, they would continue to produce Marill Eggs. However, does this still hold true?

Do Pokemon Still Need Incense to Make Baby Pokemon Eggs?

In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the use of Incense to hatch baby Pokemon Eggs is no longer necessary. Additionally, Incense items are no longer available in these versions. This means that Marill, Wobbuffet, Roselia, Chimecho, Sudowoodo, Mr. Mime, Chansey, Snorlax, and Mantine cannot be hatched from Eggs in Scarlet and Violet. Although this change does result in the removal of certain special Egg Moves for these Pokemon, the convenience of not needing Incense makes up for it. This is similar to other evolution method updates that have occurred over the years, such as the changes made to evolving Feebas into Milotic or Eevee into its various forms.
