The latest Steam Hardware Survey has disclosed that AMD has experienced a boost in sales due to the reported problems with Intel’s 13th and 14th generation processors.
The April 2024 Steam Hardware Survey has revealed intriguing trends in PC gaming hardware. The latest results suggest a potential shift from Intel to AMD among users, providing additional support to previous reports of problems with Intel’s 13th and 14th-generation CPUs.
According to the findings of the Steam Hardware survey, there has been a decrease in average CPU speeds for Intel processors. This decline ranges up to 1.8% and the exact reason behind it remains unclear. Some speculate that it could be linked to the reported instability of Intel processors. It is possible that users have deliberately lowered their CPU speeds in order to avoid any potential issues. Another potential factor could be the implementation of firmware or driver updates in an attempt to resolve these recurring problems.
According to a report from Tom’s Hardware, Intel has stated that the stability problems experienced with their 13th and 14th-generation Raptor Lake gaming CPUs are due to motherboard manufacturers disabling thermal and power protections in order to achieve higher clock speeds.
Intel specifically addressed 600 and 700 series motherboard manufacturers for configuring BIOS defaults that deactivated certain safeguards. This caused a situation where, according to Intel, there was a prolonged use of high voltage and frequency under conditions of increased heat, which may be connected to the reported problems.
Recent studies have revealed that the manufacturer is receiving approximately ten chips per day as returns. Additionally, numerous OEMs and PC manufacturers have reported instances of customers returning CPUs or complete pre-built PCs in order to swap them for AMD alternatives.
This outcome has contributed to an increase in AMD’s market share, but as long as Intel is unable to address the underlying issue causing the instability, it is the gamers who bear the consequences.
