While the reality in Shenzhen, located in Guangdong province, does not mirror such a bleak narrative, the local police force is indeed adopting innovative technology that hints at a forward-thinking future. The PM01, a humanoid robot, is now part of routine policing, assisting officers in various enforcement tasks.
The Future of Policing: Enter PM01
The PM01 was launched by EngineAI, a technology startup based in Shenzhen, on December 4, 2024. This robot, standing at a modest height of 4.5 feet and weighing under 90 pounds, may not have the menacing stature of a Hollywood RoboCop, but it packs impressive technological advancements.
As reported by the South China Morning Post, the PM01 utilizes an “advanced reinforcement learning algorithm” that enables it to walk naturally and even perform acrobatic front flips. Additionally, it is equipped with a LiDAR remote sensing system, allowing it to effectively navigate its surroundings and respond to commands from its human counterparts.

Currently, the PM01 is exclusive to the Shenzhen police department, serving as a support mechanism for officers. However, other innovative robotic solutions are also being deployed across China. Moreover, a wheeled police assistant named Xiao An recently patrolled the Nanjingnan Railway Station, showcasing its utility in urban safety.
