A leading industry analyst has proposed a radical shift in gaming paradigms, suggesting that the solution to escalating hardware prices lies in transitioning away from traditional consoles towards a streaming model reminiscent of Netflix.
In recent times, the financial burden of gaming systems has increased significantly due to rising production expenses. Factors such as intensified use of artificial intelligence (AI), a shortage of RAM, and other economic variables have all contributed to this trend. In 2025, Microsoft raised the prices of its Xbox Series X|S consoles, while Sony announced similar adjustments for the PlayStation 5.
Looking ahead, analysts predict further price hikes, with early estimates suggesting that the next generation PlayStation, potentially the PlayStation 6, could be up to 50% more expensive than its predecessor. Some versions may even reach the staggering price point of $1, 000, potentially limiting access for many players who may struggle to upgrade to the forthcoming PlayStation or Xbox hardware.
The Future of Consoles: Analyst Predicts Change
In a recent YouTube discussion titled “How the AI RAM shortage crisis could kill video game consoles!”, Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Securities, expressed skepticism about the possibility of hardware costs decreasing in the future, even after supply chain issues are resolved.
“My 40 years of economic study have shown that prices rarely decline, ” Pachter stated in the video.“Vendors determine that there’s a threshold price where consumers will tolerate the cost and continue purchasing the product.”
Pachter further elaborated that he believes console prices will continue to rise unless a viable alternative emerges.“As long as demand for gaming components remains high for other reasons—such as AI applications—I believe console prices will keep increasing, ” he remarked. He suggested that the optimal solution lies in eliminating traditional consoles entirely and transitioning to game streaming directly through televisions.
“For over a decade, I’ve predicted the eventual end of the console lifecycle. Each subsequent console iteration will likely be smaller than its predecessor, largely due to increasing costs, ” he noted.
Both Microsoft and Sony are already making significant moves towards streaming, with offerings like Xbox Cloud Gaming and the PlayStation Portal enabling users to access games without a dedicated console. Yet, these options face notable challenges, including latency issues and a restricted selection of available titles.
According to Pachter, establishing a Netflix-style streaming service, which would allow gameplay directly through smart TVs without the current limitations, represents the only sustainable solution to combat rising hardware expenses.
