A Japanese gacha game has recently altered its character designs, transforming them into shadowed figures on iOS platforms. This drastic change comes after Apple flagged certain elements of the game as “potentially offensive, ”prompting developers to obscure significant portions of the artwork to keep the game available for users.
According to a report by Automaton, the controversy began in August when an update for the mobile RPG, Twinkle Star Knights, did not pass Apple’s review. The tech giant raised concerns regarding specific illustrations and animations, leading to a series of rejected builds. Apple’s reviewers even suggested that artwork from the game’s 2023 launch could require amendments.
Transforming Characters for Compliance with App Store Regulations
Apple’s App Store guidelines are notoriously stringent, particularly concerning suggestive imagery, fantasy violence, and content deemed offensive. Gacha games, which often include fan service elements in their character designs, are frequently scrutinized under these regulations.
Following the initial rejection, the game’s publisher issued an apology to iOS users and attempted to provide a limited cloud version while making aesthetic adjustments. However, despite significant revisions to several female characters, the new designs were once again rejected by Apple, which found them in violation of its content policies.

After two months of ongoing revisions and negotiations, the developers devised a temporary solution. Art that received internal clearance remains unchanged, but any visuals still awaiting approval have been obscured as solid black silhouettes. This unusual approach, which replaces large segments of the character roster with shadowed forms, has proven effective in securing App Store accessibility, allowing the game to remain downloadable.
As for when the iconic characters of Twinkle Star Knights will return to their original designs, that remains uncertain. For now, the game can be found on both the App Store and Google Play, albeit transformed into a mere shadow of its former self.
