Anthem has officially reached its end. As of January 12, 2026, the game’s servers have been permanently deactivated, signaling the conclusion of BioWare’s ambitious yet troubled online title.
Released on February 22, 2019, EA’s Anthem became available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Developed by BioWare, a studio renowned for creating iconic franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, the game was highly anticipated. However, it struggled to meet expectations.
From its launch, Anthem faced significant challenges, including a lack of engaging content, a daunting progression system, and a storyline that failed to captivate players. These initial shortcomings quickly led to its decline.

With the servers now offline, access to Anthem has been completely revoked, as all game content was reliant on EA’s infrastructure.
Shutdown of Anthem Servers
Following its rocky launch, BioWare committed to improving Anthem, expressing intentions to “reinvent the core gameplay loop”with structured goals and rewarding challenges. A blog update in February 2020 outlined these plans, but by February 2021, all development efforts had come to a standstill.
On July 3, 2025, EA announced a final update regarding Anthem, which included the cessation of in-game currency sales, confirming that the game would no longer be operational after January 12, 2026.

Now, with the servers officially offline, Anthem has become completely unplayable. In line with other titles such as Concord, XDefiant, and MultiVersus, Anthem lacks a single-player or offline mode, rendering the entire gaming experience inaccessible.
As the game has been available for nearly seven years and frequently offered at discounted rates, players will not be receiving refunds.
Looking ahead, BioWare seems to be shifting its focus back to the Mass Effect series. The development team is reportedly exploring narratives that follow up on the mainline story after the mixed reception of 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda.
Details regarding the anticipated release of the next installment in the Mass Effect series are currently scarce, especially as the developers finalize their work on the upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard, set to launch in 2024.
