Apex Legends players have identified a significant challenge that may be deterring new participants from diving into the popular battle royale game, an issue that has persisted for some time.

In recent months, the player base of Apex Legends has seen a steady decline. Long-standing fans of the game express their frustration over various factors impacting the game’s overall health, particularly the dominance of certain characters, server reliability, and the prevalence of cheaters.

While Respawn Entertainment has made attempts to address these concerns through quality-of-life updates rather than an abundance of fresh content, there has yet to be a noticeable increase in player activity.

As veteran players explore potential solutions, they have pinpointed a critical obstacle that seems to be preventing newcomers from developing a passion for the game.

Call for Free Legends Access in Apex Legends

Many fans are advocating for an increase in the number of free legends available to new players. A Reddit user known as xl_Chunk_lx remarked, “Gatekeeping legends kills new players.” With 26 legends currently in the game, the frustration is palpable when new players only have access to six initially. The user suggested that Respawn should reconsider this model ahead of the upcoming season.

Additionally, xl_Chunk_lx referenced Marvel Rivals, which has achieved considerable success by providing immediate access to all characters upon launch, illustrating a contrasting approach that many players find appealing.

In Apex Legends, players can unlock additional legends either by purchasing them with real money or by earning legend tokens through gameplay. However, the latter often requires a substantial investment of time, which can create barriers for new players. One user shared their experience: “I played until I was level 21 and didn’t even have enough to unlock one legend, which kind of bored me out.”

The dwindling player count over the last year showcases a troubling trend. Another player noted, “It was acceptable to have 3 out of 8 legends when the game was launched. But now we have 26! At the very least, players should have access to 2-3 options per class!”

Some community members feel that the current model is unfair to newcomers, as it places them at a disadvantage, primarily because some of the free legends aren’t as powerful as their newer counterparts. “It may have been okay years ago, but now it’s just unnecessary,” another player added, echoing widespread sentiment among the community.
