A modder desired an arcade machine for their compact living space, thus they created their own in a compact ‘briefcase’ design.
For many, the thrill of playing on an arcade cabinet is unmatched. Several businesses, including Arcade1Up and Evercade, have emerged to meet the demand for this unique form of nostalgia. Nevertheless, individuals with limited space may feel that owning an arcade cab is out of reach.
Despite living in a small apartment, modder and Redditor No_Beautiful_8981 was determined to own an arcade machine. This had always been their dream, but the limited space posed a dilemma.
After careful consideration, No_Beautiful_8981 concluded that the most ideal resolution would be an arcade cabinet that could be conveniently packed away and stored when not in use.
In order to start this ambitious project, No_Beautiful_8981 acquired a fitting box to serve as a case. The box was purchased from Etsy and was designed to resemble a vintage suitcase or briefcase.
Due to its composition of MDF, it would be simple to affix components using wood screws.
Before finalizing the design, No_Beautiful_8981 created multiple prototypes and ultimately decided to use a Raspberry Pi 5 as the central component. The build also incorporated two off-the-shelf arcade kits for the controls, an LCD screen mounted on the briefcase lid for video output, and speakers mounted on the controller panel.
Despite having limited woodworking skills, No_Beautiful_8981 was able to apply their knowledge to create custom panels for the LCD bezel and to incorporate slots for the joystick and buttons.
The speakers were even provided with a mesh fabric covering to enhance their quality.
The outcome is a partially movable – or maybe ‘portable’ – gaming cabinet that can be safely packed away when not in use. Its compact size and shape facilitate secure storage in a closet or wardrobe until one is ready to play Street Fighter II or Ghouls n’ Ghosts.
