Are Wistoria: Wand and Sword and Danmachi Connected? A Closer Look

The current buzz surrounding the Wistoria: Wand and Sword anime has left fans questioning its connection to Fujino Omori’s other series, Danmachi (Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?). Despite sharing a similar setting and atmosphere, the former also features characters from the latter fantasy series.

In the most recent episode of Wistoria: Wand and Sword, viewers were treated to the dynamic action of Lefiya Viridis and Filvis Challa, two significant characters from Danmachi. Along with these two, fans of the manga would also recognize other characters from Fujino Omori’s acclaimed light novel series in his new manga.

Many fans wonder if there is a connection between Wistoria: Wand and Sword and Danmachi due to their similarities. However, it should be noted that these two series actually take place in separate worlds. Despite this, author Fujino Omori has incorporated characters and names from his previous series into the new one.

Note: This article contains spoilers for both of these series.

Exploring the differences between Wistoria: Wand and Sword and Danmachi

At first glance, Wistoria: Wand and Sword appeared to be a continuation of Danmachi (Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) or a story set in the same fantasy universe due to its similar setting and the presence of a dungeon. However, as the story unfolded, it became evident that Will Serfort’s world was vastly distinct from Bell Cranel’s Orario.

According to Wistoria: Wand and Sword manga, the world was plunged into darkness centuries ago by sky invaders. In order to defeat them, a group of five formidable mages, known as Magia Vander, constructed a formidable barrier atop a tower known as Mercedes Caulis.

The barrier erected by them keeps darkness at bay and ushers in light to the world. The Rigarden Magic Academy is currently training powerful mages to uphold the barrier and safeguard the magical kingdom. Within the kingdom lies a mysterious dungeon, filled with untold secrets waiting to be discovered.

However, the narrative of Danmachi focuses on Gods who come to the world and establish guilds (Familia) where adventurers can join and prove their worth. While both series feature “Towers”and “Dungeons,”their intentions are quite distinct. It is clear that the discrepancies in the lore do not link the universes of these two series.

Despite this, Fujino Omori has continued to include characters from Danmachi in his latest series, leading fans to believe that the two series are intertwined. For instance, in episodes 5 and 6, Lefiya Viridis and Filvis Challia were shown observing the Grand Magic Festival.

Danmachi states that Lefiya Viridis is a member of the Loki Familia and holds the rank of a second-class adventurer. She has earned the moniker “Thousand Elf”due to her skill in utilizing elf magic. Additionally, Filvis Challia was the leader of the Dionysus Familia.

Despite this, Omori-san’s latest series does not include a “Familia”system. Instead, these elven mages are members of the Elf Faction, serving under the leadership of Magia Vander Ellenor Ljos Alf. Interestingly, after episode 5 was released, Fujino Omori tweeted in a playful manner that he had incorporated Lefiya and Filvis into the story.

Additionally, manga enthusiasts would be aware that Finn, the leader of the Loki Familia in Wistoria: Wand and Sword, is a crucial character in Fujino Omori’s story, alongside Lefiya and Filvis.

Despite having the artistic freedom to introduce characters from one major fiction into another, Fujino Omori’s series remain separate entities. The narrative, lore, and character intentions are distinct and not interconnected.

Despite that, it is still enjoyable to witness the well-known characters from Danmachi in a new environment of Wistoria: Wand and Sword. It is uncertain if the author will continue to include hidden references for fans in their future works.
